Anonymous: What you describe is a beating, not a mild spanking. If a small child does something dangerous a swat on the butt sometimes reinforces the importance of being told not to do that. I generally do not support even light spankings but there are always exceptions, especially in cases of danger to the child.

Joaqin, Glad to see you liked Haggis. There are many recipes used for Haggis in Scotland, but in general it reminds me of good German liver sausage, only dryer (due to the oatmeal).

Dear Sir,

I and my school-mates were spanked during our time at school in the 1960s in Germany.

Our teachers who used force were evil members of the NAZI party that had not been removed from the schools.

My teacher,a certain Mr. Jakob Jochum, not only spanked us, no, he hit us with wooden sticks, screaming "you dirty jewish pig".

The wooden sticks broke on our backs; we were only six to 10 years old boys.

you are displaying the cognitive dissonance --
the complete disconnect between brain and reality --
that is typical of (us) Americans.

Americans are trained from birth NOT TO FEEL THEIR
FEELINGS - especially feelings that are not pleasant
ones - because that might keep them from BUYING.

However . . .

Honoring war dead "and all of our departed loved
ones" is just simply NOT a "HAPPY" occasion. And so
it is completely inappropriate to wish people a
"happy..." Memorial Day weekend.

Does it make you "happy" to think of your young
wife's death from cancer? Does it make you "happy"
to think of her remains rotting away somewhere,
or dissipated in smithereens into the atmosphere?

Should anyone who lost a loved one in war be "happy" at the
remembrance of that devastating loss?

Please, Sir, DO wish people a "safe" Memorial Day
weekend.

Please DO NOT wish them a "happy" one.

Jewish organization wants to make memorial services for German WWII soldiers illegal

Jewish interests organization Federatief Joods Nederland (Federative Jewish Netherlands, FJN) is going to try to ban all Dutch memorial services for the dead at which deceased German military are commemorated from next year’s Memorial Day on 4 May 2013, says Herman Loonstein, solicitor, in the organization’s name in an interview for NRC Handelsblad.

Last week, a court in Zutphen banned the mayor and council members of the municipality of Bronckhorst from walking past the graves of ten German military who had found death there to commemorate them during Memorial Day service in Vorden. The local 4 May Committee had previously included this option in their programme. The Committee opined that 67 years after World War II the time had finally come to “fraternize and reconciliate,” but FJN called this option an “unjust act against victims, both dead and alive.”

In the proceedings for a provisional decision the judge said Friday afternoon that commemorating fallen German soldiers may be “fitting, though not on 4 May and not in the same breath as commemorating the victims of the Nazi occupation.”

On the North Sea island of Schiermonnikoog, another place where German military lie buried, they have been playing the German national anthem during Memorial Day service for years. Says solicitor Loonstein: “At Schiermonnikoog we will first enter talks with the local Committee. If that doesn’t go well, we will file another lawsuit.”

It is not clear at how many Memorial Day services there are commemorations for deceased Germans. Loonstein will therefore try to get hold of the schedules for next year’s services throughout the nation “at an early stage,” stating, “If we see that Germans are commemorated, we will counter that. The decision in the Vorden case was so clear that I can’t imagine us losing other such cases.”

Only the second Socialist to lead the postwar French republic, president-elect François Hollande consistently emphasised during the campaign that much more was at stake in the election than France's destiny.
In his victory speech , Hollande declared that his triumph also represented a "fresh start for Europe". Throwing down the gauntlet to Berlin, Hollande said that "austerity need not be Europe's fate", demanded a policy shift on the euro crisis to promote growth and employment, and served notice he would act as champion for other EU leaders quietly cheering his emergence as the key challenger to Angela Merkel and her prescriptions for settling Europe's financial gloom.
In the short term at least, the trajectory of Europe's long-running financial and currency crisis will be shaped more by the fallout from the tumultuous elections in Greece. But the timing and outcome of the French ballot may be conspiring to prove Hollande right.
Certainly, the politics of managing the EU's worst ever quandary will hinge on the new French leader and the chemistry he conjures with Merkel in Berlin. The two have never met. He is expected to go to Berlin next Wednesday after being sworn in as head of state.
Hollande is to make his European debut next month at an EU summit with a dramatic intervention aimed at shifting the terms of the German-led austerity response to 30 months of currency crisis, tabling a demand for a new European pact on "growth, responsibility and governance".
