Lessons from Empires Past: Once Privilege Limits Social Mobility, Collapse Is Inevitable ~ link ~ I am headlining this, because as an historian I can see the importance of this.  Currently, the tiny elite at the top has gotten totally out-of-control, to the point that they are destroying the Middle Class and the American Dream and similar 'dreams' around the world.  They are dooming themselves and the world to chaos and destruction on a massive scale!!!  Stirling

The greater the concentration of wealth and power, the lower the social mobility; the lower the social mobility, the greater the odds that the system will collapse when faced with a crisis that it would have easily handled in more egalitarian times.

When the economy is expanding faster than the population and the tide is lifting all ships large and small, the majority of people feel their chances of getting ahead are positive (even if the actual chances remain low). But when the economy is stagnating, and they see those at the apex of the pyramid still amassing monumental gains, the majority realizes their chances of securing a better life are declining. The natural result is frustration, anger and a disavowal of the corrupt status quo: in other words, precisely what the U.S. is experiencing in this election cycle.

Houston Flooding is now the 8th Historic Flood to hit USA since the End of September ~ link ~ We do seem to be in the early stages of something really big and not so good!!!  Stirling

Why has the United States been hit by historic flood after historic flood in recent months?  The flooding that is pummeling the city of Houston is the 8th historic flood in this country since the end of September.  City officials down in Houston have labeled the flooding that is currently slamming the city “a life-threatening emergency“, and they are insisting that “Houston residents should avoid travel at all costs today.”  At this point, dozens of subdivisions have been flooded and major sections of Interstate 10 and Interstate 45 are under water near downtown.  Authorities are telling us that water is getting to areas that it has never been before, and Fire Department spokesman Jay Evans announced that the water is already 10 to 15 feet deep in some areas.  But even though some parts of Houston have already gotten close to 20 inches of rain within the last 24 hours, there is more rain in the forecast, so this crisis is far from over. The giant storm that has caused all of this rain was a complete surprise to many residents of Houston.  A lot of people woke up on Monday morning to discover that their neighborhoods now resembled Waterworld.

Yellowstone Super Volcano Eruption in 2016???  ~ link ~ Do read this one in full at the link.  Stirling

Over the past week, our planet has been hit by large earthquake after large earthquake, and according to Volcano Discovery there are 38 volcanoes around the world that are erupting right now.  We have seen a dramatic spike in global seismic activity that is unlike anything that we have seen in ages, and that is why what is going on at Yellowstone is so incredibly alarming.  Geologists tell us that a full-blown eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano would have up to 2,000 times the power of the Mount St. Helens volcanic eruption of 1980, and approximately two-thirds of the country would immediately become uninhabitable.  As you will see below, there are signs that something big is getting ready to happen at Yellowstone, and if it does erupt all of our lives will be permanently changed forever.

When a river located above a supervolcano that could wipe out most of the country starts boiling, you would think that would make headline news all over the nation.
But it didn’t. It would be exceedingly difficult to overstate the potential danger that Yellowstone poses to the United States.  Other than an extremely large asteroid or meteor, it is hard to imagine any natural disaster that would pose a greater threat.

Video captures moment Saturday's 7.8 earthquake struck Ecuador ~ link

This comes just a few days after massive tremors hit Japan, including one at 7.3 that trapped over a thousand people after another earthquake killed nine people there.

A total of seven major earthquakes have now hit in the last four days, and experts are warning that all these large quakes and unrest around the so-called “ring of fire” in the Pacific could be leading up to “the big one”.

Ecuador death toll over 350 and climbing ~ link

There have been desperate scenes as rescuers and family members searched for survivors, often with bare hands. Teams from Switzerland, Spain and several Latin American countries have arrived to join the search effort.

More than 2,000 people were injured in the quake, Ecuador's most powerful in decades, which hit its Pacific coast. Earlier, President Rafael Correa warned that the death toll was likely to rise, and said there were still people alive under the rubble of collapsed buildings. He said it was the biggest tragedy to hit Ecuador in the past seven decades.

Unusual quake cluster has Japan worried ~ link

There is a known concentration of faults in the area. Still, experts say it is highly unusual to have a string of quakes measuring around magnitude 6 and stretching over such a vast area. The epicenter of the Oita jolt was about 100km away from the first Kumamoto quake.

"I don't quite understand what is happening with the recent earthquakes, because it's an unfamiliar phenomenon," said Yoshihisa Iio, a professor at Kyoto University's Research Center for Earthquake Prediction.
