America: 80% of Total Population Near Proverty ~ link ~ So how is 'Politics as Usual' working out for you?!!  Stirling
This startling new statistic is means that 80% of the population is struggling with joblessness, or with near-poverty. Many of them are relying on government assistance to help pay the bills or feed their families. Without that assistance, this near-poverty statistic means that they too would be poor.
In spite of claims that things are getting better, the loss of good-paying jobs in the manufacturing sector which used to provide a living wage for what used to be the “Working Class” is the likely cause of the increasing trend towards poverty in America.

Sears/K-Mart to close 78 additional US stores ~ link
The new Sears closings are the latest in a wave of retail chain shutdowns, including mass closings by Walmart and Macy’s affecting hundreds of stores and thousands of jobs. Last month, the sporting goods chain The Sports Authority filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and said it would close at least 140 of its 463 stores and lay off 3,400 of its 13,000 employees.

These closings are directly related to the social crisis facing large sections of the working population nearly eight years after the Wall Street crash of 2008 and the supposed beginning of an economic “recovery” in June of 2009.

China successfully launches new DF-41 ICBM test into South China Sea ~ link
The drive towards the Third World War continues!  Stirling
China conducted a test launch of its newest nuclear capable ICBM, the DF-41, on April 12th. The missile was launched from a road-mobile launch vehicle. Two multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRV) from the launch were tracked by U.S. satellites.

Some sources claim that the unarmed MIRVs splashed down somewhere in the South China Sea, but neither Chinese nor U.S. officials will confirm this. In response to questions regarding the impact location of the dummy warheads, the Chinese Defense Ministry cryptically responded that, “It is normal for China to execute scientific experiments within its territory, and these experiments are not aimed at any specific country nor target”, admitting only that the missile was test fired “near the South China Sea on April 12.”

Austria's far-right Freedom Party candidate has come top in the first round of presidential elections, projections show. Norbert Hofer has about 36% of the votes for the mostly ceremonial role - not enough to avoid a run-off in May.

Independent contenders Alexander Van der Bellen and Irmegard Griss are fighting for second place. For the first time since World War Two, the candidates from Austria's two main parties did not make it to the run-off.
