Third Intifada: UN Deputy Secretary-General blames Israel for escalation of violence ~ link ~ Israel has a host of legal obligations as the occupying power, obligations that she has broken countless times and continues to do so. Stirling
UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson said on Thursday that the crisis in the occupied territories, including East al-Quds (Jerusalem), is the result of Israel’s "stifling and humiliating occupation of Palestinian territories for almost half a century.”
Eliasson made the remarks in a briefing to the UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East in a meeting chaired by Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, the foreign minister of Spain, which holds the 15-member body’s presidency for October.
“The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has, once again, entered a dangerous phase. The eruption of violence gripping the occupied West Bank, including East al-Quds, as well as Israel and Gaza shows no signs of abating. From 1 to 21 October, 47 Palestinians and seven Israelis have been killed. More than 5,000 Palestinians and some 70 Israelis have been injured,” he noted.
Putin just warned that a Global War is increasingly more likely ~ link ~
Speaking today at the International Valdai Discussion Club's 12th annual meeting in Sochi, Putin delivered a sweeping critique of military strategy and foreign policy touching on everything from the erroneous labeling of some extremists as “moderates” to the futility of nuclear war.
“Why play with words dividing terrorists into moderate and not moderate. What's the difference?,” Putin asked, adding that “success in fighting terrorists cannot be reached if using some of them as a battering ram to overthrow disliked regimes [because] it's just an illusion that they can be dealt with [later], removed from power and somehow negotiated with.”
What 'you going to do' when the nuclear bombs start to fall? ~ link ~
Let's imagine for a few minutes that the ongoing-global-currency war and proxy wars somehow, unexpectedly, blow up into a world war directly involving you, wherever it is that you live. Specifically, imagine that one side is able to achieve surprise, and as you sit at your desk, today, the power and all telecommunications go out without warning. Within 15 minutes, everyone notices a large amount of what is obviously military aircraft activity, evidenced by sonic booms, and soon there are several very bright flashes on the horizon in the direction of the closest military base.
The odds of this actually happening are not zero.
You may very well survive a nuclear war. Did you know that there have been over 500 above-ground detonations of nuclear weapons.
Third Intifada: New evictions of Arab families - Part of the 'Battle for Jerusalem' ~ link ~
Nearly 1000 Jewish and Arab residents joined seven mayors from different municipalities to form a human chain north of Israel, calling for coexistence and condemning violence.
They lined up along the road in the Wadi Ara region to call for calm, understanding, and cooperation in creating a shared society for all citizens.
The Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) has ruled that the communications of MPs and peers in the Houses of Parliament are subject to the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act of 2000 (RIPA) along with rest of the UK population and do not enjoy special immunity.
The October 14 decision means the UK’s intelligence agencies, MI5, MI6 and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) can legally carry out covert surveillance on the postal, telephone and internet communications of parliamentarians.
Jeb Bush's biggest vulnerability is 9/11 and Trump is ,going in for the kill' ~ link ~
“No,” Trump returned, “you're pathetic for saying nothing happened during your brother's term when the World Trade Center was attacked and came down."
And here, Trump makes perhaps the most honest, sanest, and above all, unassailably correct statement he’s uttered during this campaign season thus far. Though endless outlets criticized the billionaire for blaming Bush for the attacks (and I’ll defer to Peter Beinart’s excellent Atlantic piece on why that’s also true), the question of blame is essentially irrelevant. What’s unquestionably true is that Bush did not keep us safe, a basic reality revealed by the fact of 9/11. It’s not rocket science. And yet, for 13 years now, even Bush’s foes haven’t said as much.
