Migrant Crisis continues in Europe ~ link ~
On Thursday, Macedonia declared a state of emergency to cope with migrants - many from the Middle East - who are trying to reach northern EU states. The UN urged both Greece and Macedonia to tackle a "deteriorating situation". Macedonian police earlier fired tear gas to disperse the migrants. Razor wire has been rolled across the frontier to prevent people from entering.
Some 44,000 people have reportedly travelled through the country in the past two months, meeting little border resistance.

Yemeni forces shot down Saudi Apache helicopter as War continues ~ link ~
Saudi Arabia’s military aggression against Yemen has suffered a new setback as forces loyal to the Houthi Ansarullah movement and the allied army units reportedly down a Saudi military helicopter in the kingdom’s southern territory.
Yemen’s al-Masirah TV said Friday that the helicopter was downed in al-Khobah district of Jizan Province, on the Yemeni-Saudi border. The Apache chopper was targeted by a surface-to-air missile. The Yemenis have used such projectiles over the past few months to retaliate against Saudi Arabia’s all-out air campaign.
The United States has criticized Saudi Arabia over launching airstrikes on the Yemeni city of Hodeida, calling the Red Sea port a "lifeline" for humanitarian relief. On Tuesday, Saudi warplanes bombed Yemen's port of Hodeida, killing several dock workers and destroying the port’s infrastructure.
The international community condemned the Saudi offensive, with one United Nations aid official telling the Security Council that the airstrikes were "in clear contravention of international humanitarian law."

IDF leader Eisenkot: Challenging the known order ~ link ~
IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot pulled off a brilliant maneuver this weekend, by allowing the publication of a document which detailed the IDF’s strategic doctrine. In this act, he forced the government into accepting a national security strategy as the IDF sees it - including what threats Israel faces, and the planned responses to those threats.

One week on: China's Currency War leads to Global FX Carnage ~ link ~
One of the big problems with China's FX move is that although they've "only" seen a 3% currency fall (in the onshore Yuan) since their announcement last week, as Deutsche's Jim Reid explains... others have subsequently followed suit either deliberately or via market pressure. Emerging Market FX has been falling for 9 straight weeks but the last 2 have seen a dramatic escalation in the carnage...

European stocks crash by most in four years ~ link ~
Carnage - everywhere. A surging EUR - as CNH carry traders unwind en masse - has led to an unwind across most risky assets in Europe. This week saw EuroStoxx 600 - the broad index - crash almost 6%, its biggest drop since September 2011. Perhaps most stunningly, Germany's DAX was the biggest loser - collapsing 7.4% on the week. European bonds are are also seeing risk increase dramatically with Portugal and Italy worst (aside from Greece's blowout). Europe's VIX topped 30 this week, as US VIX surges.

The carnage continues to roll around the world as Asia and Europe react to US weakness which reacted to China weakness and now US is retumbling on fresh China weakness as the global carry trade unwinds across every asset class...

When $8.5 TRILLION Is 'Chump Change' ~ link ~
Imagine that the Pentagon accounted for every dime of that missing $8.5 trillion, named every profiteer, documented the life history of every man, woman, and child killed, and passed the strictest audit by an independent team of 1,000 accountants reporting to 35 Nobel Laureates — if that happened, I ask you, exactly what difference would it make?
Why is the $8.5 trillion that went to unknown purposes worse than the other trillions that went to known and named weapons and dictators and militants and recruitment campaigns? The documented and accounted for spending all went to evil purposes. Presumably the unaccounted for “waste” did the same. What’s the difference between the two?
As World Beyond War points out, war has a huge direct financial cost, the vast majority of which is in funds spent on the preparation for war — or what’s thought of as ordinary, non-war military spending. Very roughly, the world spends $2 trillion every year on militarism, of which the United States spends about half, or $1 trillion. This U.S. spending also accounts for roughly half of the U.S. government’s discretionary budget each year and is distributed through several departments and agencies. Much of the rest of world spending is by members of NATO and other allies of the United States, although China ranks second in the world.
