Maryland: As looting continues Governor promises to protect Baltimore ~ link ~
The governor of Maryland promised Tuesday to put the appropriate assets in place to prevent further looting that was seen in Baltimore in the past 24 hours in reaction to the funeral of Freddie Gray, a young black man who died while in police custody.
Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, said officials in his cabinet have been meeting with city leaders to better prepare for any new unrest. Hogan said he would not point fingers about the city's response under Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
Rawlings-Blake was under intense pressure to defend her response to the violence that has ripped apart her city following Gray's funeral, particularly her remarks in which she suggested those who "wished to destroy" need their space.
Baltimore: Another night of trouble lurks ~ link ~
Protests remained largely peaceful in Baltimore as dusk began to fall over the riot-racked city Tuesday, but police said they noticed an increasingly angry tone among demonstrators as thousands of police and National Guard troops readied to enforce a 10 p.m. curfew.
About 2,000 National Guard troops and more than 1,000 police officers have deployed to the streets of Baltimore, according to Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan. The city has been under a state of emergency after stone-throwing and arson erupted Monday hours after the funeral of a black man who suffered a mortal injury while in police custody.

Royal Saudi Air Force bombs civilian runway in Sana'a, Yemen, to block aid flights ~ link ~
Iran’s state news agency IRNA said Saudi jets tried to force what it said was an aid plane back after it entered Yemeni airspace, but the pilots had ignored these “illegal warnings”.
The jets then bombed Sana’a airport as the plane was making an approach to land, forcing it to turn back, IRNA added. It said the plane, belonging to the Red Crescent, was carrying food and medical aid to Sana’a.
Saudis running out of time to bomb Yemen stalemate ~ link ~ Large elements of both the Saudi Army and the National Guard deserted rather than engage in a ground invasion of Yemen. The Saudis are in a 'pickle' of their own making...too bad!!! Stirling
The frontlines of Yemen's messy civil war have barely moved after weeks of Saudi air strikes and fighting between rival factions, but behind the scenes there are faint signs of shifts that could alter the balance on the ground.
At stake is the stability and political future of a country that is home to al Qaeda's most active international wing, has become a theatre of rivalry between top regional powers Saudi Arabia and Iran, and sits on main shipping routes.
Is the Royal House of Saud teetering on the verge of collapse ~ link ~ It is hard to say for sure, but the refusal of large elements of its Army and more importantly, its National Guard, to invade Yemen is a Major Red Flag. It may well push some lower ranking princes and/or generals to seize power, and that could really change the Middle East dynamics!!! Stirling

India: Finally getting modern artillery? ~ link ~ This is one area where the Indian Armed Forces were really lacking. Stirling
It still remains unclear whether the Dhanush gun genuinely fulfills all service requirements, according to Defense News. However, “[t]he Army is desperate to acquire the weapon as it has not been able to buy a single howitzer since 1987, despite a 1999 long-term plan to convert all existing artillery guns to 155mm/52 caliber at a cost of more than $6 billion,” Defense News emphasizes.
The Indian army’s 1999 Field Artillery Rationalization Plan aimed to acquire 2,800-3,000 155 mm/52-calibre guns of all kinds and 155 mm/39-calibre lightweight howitzers by 2027. At the moment the military has merely around 200 guns in service, despite the known utility of artillery as illustrated by the 1999 Kargil War.
French Navy does NOT want the two Mistral-class helicopter carriers that Russia ordered but Hollande will not deliver ~ link ~
The French Navy already has three Mistral-class ships, put into service between 2006 and 2012. According to Merchet, sailors are happy with them and there is no need for extra ships for them.
The transfer of two extra ships to the French Navy, while the budget remains the same, would mean a loss of several other, smaller vessels, Merchet explained.
American Oligarchy: 42% of all US campaign cash comes from only 0.01% of the population ~ link ~ When was the last time YOU donated $100,000 to a politician? Stirling
This is an economic fight, but this is also a political fight. The biggest financial institutions aren’t just big – they wield enormous political power. Last December, Citibank lobbyists wrote an amendment to Dodd-Frank and persuaded their friends in Washington to attach it to a bill that had to pass or the government would have been shut down. And when there was pushback over the amendment, the CEO of JPMorgan, Jamie Dimon, personally got on the phone with Members of Congress to secure their votes. How many individuals who are looking for a mortgage or a credit card could make that call? How many small banks could have their lobbyists write an amendment and threaten to shut down the US government if they didn’t get it? None. Keep in mind that the big banks aren’t trying to make the market more competitive; they just want rules that create more advantages for themselves. The system is rigged and those who rigged it want to keep it that way.
