IDF priorities Naners IDV over V-22s ~ link ~
Israel has cancelled an agreement to purchase the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor transport aircraft as part of a shift in defence procurement priorities in the wake of the recent operation against militants in the Gaza Strip.
US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced in October 2013 that Israel would get six V-22s from the "next order to go on the assembly line". The tilt-rotors would have significantly enhanced the IDF's ability to carry out long-range search and rescue and special forces missions.
The decision to cancel this agreement has freed up USD800 million that will be invested in more Namer armoured personnel carriers (APCs), precision weapons and training time, according to Israeli security sources. The Israeli defence establishment has become extremely keen to increase its Namer fleet after Operation 'Protective Edge' against Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip this summer. The conflict not only exposed the vulnerability of the veteran M113 APCs, thousands of which are still in IDF service, it also highlighted the superior survivability of the heavily armoured Namer. There were no cases of soldiers sustaining injuries inside a Namer that was hit by anti-tank projectiles.
