A third Ukrainian helicopter Mil Mi-24 was downed at a checkpoint in the east Ukrainian city of Sloviansk that resulted in a literal explosion of the chopper, the fate of its crew is unclear, TV news channel Rossiya-24 reported on Friday.
The city defenders have earlier hit two Ukrainian helicopters, crew’s fate unclear, “One helicopter is Mil Mi-24 and the second one is most likely Mi-8; one pilot was killed and another one was taken to hospital,” a representative of Sloviansk police told ITAR-TASS earlier in the day.

Ukraine's president said Friday that "many" pro-Russian rebels were killed and wounded in a crackdown by Ukrainian troops in the restive eastern city of Slovyansk.
Russia has called an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council because of the "serious escalation of violence" in Ukraine.
Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov said two Ukrainian soldiers were killed and seven wounded in Friday's fighting and that insurgents suffered significant losses, including many killed and injured. He did not provide specific casualties figures.

Russia was "extremely worried" about the fate of Russians in the eastern Ukrainian town, including an envoy sent to help free German and other foreign hostages, the Kremlin spokesman said.
The dramatic language seemed to raise the stakes, as Moscow has tens of thousands of troops massed on the border and claims the right to invade if needed to protect Russian speakers.

A spokeswoman for insurgents in Slavyansk, the epicentre of tensions in eastern Ukraine, said the army had staged a “full-scale attack” on the town.

“These Western countries, their lack of discretion with military targets, it’s just horrifying,” the commentator said, adding, “It just seems like we are marching toward this inevitable third world war that could so easily be avoided by just letting nations handle their own affairs.”He alluded to the West and NATO’s interventionist approach to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and argued that in case of any military confrontation in the region, none of the warring factions will turn out to be the winner.
On Thursday, NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow said Russia’s actions in Ukraine have forced the Western military alliance to treat Russia as more of an enemy than a partner. He stated that the alliance is considering new measures to deter Russia from any aggression against NATO members along its borders.
