5,500 Ukrainian soldiers defect to serve an independent Crimea ~ link ~ Sergei Aksyonov, named prime minister last week in a local parliamentary vote, said Tuesday that talks with unit commanders led to the defections of soldiers to join an independent Crimean military.

“Of the 34 Ukrainian military units stationed in Crimea, 23 have defected,” a local government representative told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

The first western attempts to get Moscow to back down over its seizure of Crimea failed on Wednesday evening, putting pressure on the EU to resort to punitive action against the Kremlin at an emergency summit on Thursday.

Negotiations in Paris between John Kerry, the US secretary of state, and Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, broke up without agreement on Wednesday. The Americans and the Europeans hoped to persuade Moscow to open a dialogue with the new government in Kiev and also to withdraw its forces in Crimea to their bases and allow in international monitors.

Russia and the United States held their first direct talks since the start of the Ukraine crisis last night, raising hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough in the worst breach in relations between East and West since the end of the Cold War.

Though progress was limited, Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, met his counterparts from the US, France, Germany and Britain in Paris and said further discussions would take place “in days to come”, which was echoed by John Kerry, the US Secretary of State.

A tense stand-off continues between pro-Russian forces and the Ukrainian military in the Crimea region, where a UN diplomat was threatened by gunmen. 
 
Robert Serry, the secretary-general's envoy to Crimea, was forced to leave Ukraine after being besieged by an angry mob chanting pro-Russia slogans.

Pope Francis has defended the Catholic Church's record on tackling the sexual abuse of children by priests, saying "no-one else has done more" to root out paedophilia.

The comments, in an interview published Wednesday, were the pope's first response to a scathing UN report that denounced the Vatican for failing to stamp out child abuse and allowing systematic cover-ups.
 
But such measures may not only hurt Russia. In a tit-for-tat move, Russian lawmakers are drafting a law that would allow Russia to confiscate assets belonging to U.S. and European companies if sanctions are slapped on Moscow, Russian state media reported.
