1 March 2014 ~ Fourth Update
Ukraine's Acting President Puts All Armed Forces on Full Combat Alert ~ link ~ And this, as reported by the NYT, virtually assures the escalation to a hot war, as some provocation, somewhere will certainly take place: "a Ukrainian military official in Crimea said Ukrainian soldiers had been told to “open fire” if they came under attack by Russia troops or others."
The Invasion So Far: Visual summary of Russian Forces and Movements ~ link ~ Moments ago Interfax reported that two Russian anti-submarine warships have appeared off the coast of Ukraine's Crimea region, violating an agreement on Moscow's lease of a naval base, according to a Ukrainian military source as saying. Then again what else would a Ukrainian military source say. The source added that the two vessels, part of Russia's Baltic Fleet, had been sighted in a bay at Sevastopol, where Moscow's Black Sea Fleet has a base.
So imagine two extra anti-sub ships off Sevastopol in the map below which until this latest update from Contemporary Issues and Geography, was keeping an accurate running update of all the most recent developments in the staggered Russian invasion of the Ukraine.
Ukrainian Navy flagship takes Russia's side ~ link ~ The leaders of the Coup Government must be wondering just what military forces that they can count on! Stirling
Ukraine’s Navy flagship, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, has reportedly refused to follow orders from Kiev, and come over to Russia’s side and is returning home after taking part in NATO operation in the Gulf of Aden flying the Russian naval flag.
There has been conflicting information on where exactly the vessel is, but a Russian senator has confirmed to Izvestia daily that the frigate defected to the Russian side. “Ukraine’s Navy flagship the Hetman Sahaidachny has come over to our side today. It has hung out the St Andrew’s flag,” Senator Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on the international affairs, told Izvestia daily.
Russians disable Ukrainian anti-missile post in the Crimea ~ link ~ DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the Russian attack Saturday on a Ukrainian military anti-air command post in western Crimea, their first attack on an Ukrainian military facility, enabled the Russian forces to turn those missiles against any warplanes of helicopters sent from Kiev to attack them.
Russians strike Ukraine Army post in the Crimea - Kiev fears a Ukrainian Army Putsch - USN warships on standby ~ link ~ As Moscow’s master plan for Ukraine continued to unfold, Russian forces Saturday, March 1, staged their first attack on a Ukraine military installation in Crimea, while completing their takeover of the region and its severance from Ukraine. Interfax reported from a Ukrainian source that 20 soldiers had entered an anti-aircraft missile command post in western Crimea and that negotiations rather than a clash were under way.
Pro-Russian protesters storm Kharkiv City Administration Building - Russian flags hosted across eastern Ukraine ~ link ~ Even as Russia has officially deployed its military to the Ukraine, its unofficial involvement in The Crimean was well known for days. A much more notable development would be if protesters in the pro-Russian eastern part of the country were to seize control of the second largest city in the Ukraine, Kharkiv, located just miles from the Russian border as this would quickly give Russia a foothold into the east of the nation with the tactical escalation abilities such a takeover would entail. Which is why the following clip of pro-Russian protesters storming the city administration in Kharkiv is of importance: should Ukraine lose control of the city, or is forced to use troops against the people, it would be just the pretext Russia needs to "defend" citizens in this part of the country, the same argument it used for military intervention in the Crimean.
I don't know what's going on in the Ukraine, but I do know one thing: WE SHOULD STAY OUT OF IT ~ link ~
Most American mainstream media say that the Ukranian people rose up against a decadent dictator to chart their own destiny.
On the other hand, some knowledgeable commentators say that the Ukranian protests were really a violent coup initiated by the U.S., and carried out by Neo-Nazi factions within Ukraine.
Amid Escalation Fears: Russia Says Kiev Sent Fighters to Crimea ~ link ~ Armed men dispatched from Kiev to the southern Ukrainian region of Crimea attempted an overnight storm of the local Interior Ministry, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday.
“As a result of this perfidious provocation several people were injured,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “This confirms that certain well-known political circles in Kiev are striving for the destabilization of the situation… we call on all those giving such orders from Kiev to show restraint.”
Ukraine: Potential Flashpoint for Global War ~ link ~ I have been saying this for days! Stirling
Obama heads the most recklessly dangerous regime in world history. It's ruthless. It's lawless. It's out-of-control. It's reincarnated Nazism writ large.
War on humanity is the new normal. Crazed hegemonic ambitions drive policy. A potential devastating East/West confrontation looms. Will Ukraine be the flashpoint igniting it?
Ukraine's Crimea witnesses huge pro-Russian rally ~ link ~ A huge pro-Russia rally has been held in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, where thousands of residents carried Russian flags and shouted pro-Russia slogans.
On Saturday, more than 10,000 people carrying Russian flags stressed their allegiance to ousted president, Viktor Yanukovych, and shouted their support for "the aspirations of Crimea to rejoin Russia."
"Russia! Russia!" they shouted, as leaflets were distributed on the sidelines of the rally calling on people "not to obey authorities in Kiev."

Putin ready to invade Ukraine, troops seize the Crimea ~ link ~ Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded and won his parliament's approval on Saturday to invade Ukraine, where his troops have apparently already seized the Crimea peninsula, spurning Western pleas for restraint.
Talk of confrontation or outright war spread rapidly across Ukraine, with pro-Moscow demonstrators raising the Russian flag above government buildings in several cities and anti-Russian politicians calling for mobilization.
Coup Government in Kiev Demands US and UK mount a military response in the Crimea - with video ~ link ~ The new government of Ukraine, installed after a violent coup last week and headed up by former central banker Arseniy Yatsenyuk, is calling on the United States and Britain to intervene militarily after unidentified armed men seized government buildings and airports in the semi-autonomous Crimea.
Ukraine Acting President Calls Emergency Meeting of Security Chiefs - Russia Threatens to CUT OFF the GAS ~ link ~ All the dominoes are tumbling now. Moments after the Russian upper house of parliament approved the decision to use Russian troops in the Ukraine as expected, Ukraine's acting president called an emergency meeting of security chiefs according to his spokeswoman. Oleksander Turchinov summoned his Security Council after Russian President Vladimir Putin sought parliamentary approval to deploy Russian forces in the Ukrainian region of Crimea. At this point the biggest and perhaps final wildcard is whether NATO does or does not get involved. If it does, and if Russia does not back off - which it has clearly telegraphed it won't - futures may be looking at a limit down open on Sunday.
And while military escalation is now an official reality instead of merely YouTube clips of unidentified crap troops , Russia just sent another major warning shot across the bow when it issued several warnings on Saturday that Ukraine may lose a discount to the gas price it now pays to Gazprom due to Kiev's outstanding gas debt. Russia's state gas company Gazprom estimates Ukraine's outstanding gas debt at $1.55 billion for 2013 and gas deliveries so far this year. This of course, was Russia's trump card from the very beginning.
Call in Kiev to 'regain nuclear status in six months' ~ link ~ Also see this ~ link ~ Unable to resolve tensions with the largely pro-Russian autonomous region of Crimea, Kiev is bombarding Moscow with accusations and warnings. Some politicians have even threatened to restock Ukraine’s nuclear arsenal.
Putin to Use Military in the Ukraine ~ link ~ Current US foreign policy in a nutshell: Barack Obama tells Vladimir Putin "there will be costs" if Russia invades Ukraine. What does Putin do? He invades Ukraine. Only this time it's official: AP reports that the Kremlin says Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked parliament for permission to use the country's military in Ukraine. Putin says the move is needed to protect ethnic Russians and the personnel of a Russian military base in Ukraine's strategic region of Crimea.
Britain summons Russian Ambassador - Russian Ambassador to USA may be recalled ~ link
Putin gets 'green light' to send Russian military into Ukraine ~ link ~ Russia executed a de facto military takeover of a strategic region in Ukraine as the parliament in Moscow gave President Vladimir Putin a green light Saturday to proceed to protect Russian interests. The newly installed government in Kiev was powerless to react to the swift takeover of Crimea by Russian troops already in Ukraine and more flown in, aided by pro-Russian Ukrainian groups.
Putin’s move follows President Barack Obama’s warning Friday “there will be costs” if Russia intervenes militarily, sharply raising the stakes in the conflict over Ukraine’s future and evoking memories of Cold War brinkmanship. The explicit reference to the use of troops escalated days of conflict between the two countries, which started when Ukraine’s pro-Russian president was pushed out by a protest movement of people who wanted closer ties to the European Union.
Russian troops take over Ukraine's Crimea regions ~ link ~ Russian troops took over Crimea as the parliament in Moscow gave President Vladimir Putin a green light Saturday to use the military to protect Russian interests in Ukraine. The newly installed government in Kiev was powerless to react to the action by Russian troops based in the strategic region and more flown in, aided by pro-Russian Ukrainian groups.

Obama and Kerry lecture Russia on the Ukraine ~ link ~
US Secretary of State John Kerry used a State Department press conference Friday to lecture Russia on the necessity to uphold the “stability” and “territorial integrity” of Ukraine as Western intervention has brought the situation there to the boiling point.
The remarks came just shy of one week after the concerted intervention of the United States, Germany, France and other European powers led to a violent coup by fascist and far-right forces in the capital of Kiev.

CAN WASHINGTON OVERTHROW THREE GOVERNMENTS AT THE SAME TIME ~ link ~ The power of a state is measured by its ability to defend itself and to attack on one or more fronts. In this context, Washington is trying for the first time to show it can overthrow three governments simultaneously: Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela. If it succeeds, no government would be henceforth able to resist it.

On the Brink of Another War? Israel to hold Lebanon's Government "Responsible" if Hezbollah retaliates over air strikes ~ link ~ A question that lurks in the back of my mind, that I really hate to think of: Is the Ukrainian Crisis part of a plan that sees the Middle East plunged into the long-sought (by Netanyahu) General Middle East War while Russia is tied down in the Ukraine???
