Israel established a so-called buffer zone along the border with the Gaza Strip in 2008 for alleged security reasons, damaging a large portion of Palestinian farmland.
The zone officially extends 300 meters into Gaza territory, but reports indicate that the Israeli regime is in effect forcing a much larger no-go zone.
Israeli troops target Palestinian civilians, including children wandering close to the border fence, farmers, and scrap metal collectors trying to make ends meet.
Gaza remains under a crippling blockade which has been in place for over seven years. The closure - which in effect cuts off the populated sliver from the rest of the world - has caused a decline in the standards of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

In a press briefing on Friday, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Meqdad said the Syrian delegation went to Geneva, willing to discuss the Geneva communiqué from June 2012.
But the Syria National Coalition (SNC) has so far refrained from admitting that there are terrorist and extremist groups on the ground in Syria, he noted.
“Unfortunately the other side has come with a different agenda. They have come with an agenda that is not realistic, it contains only one item and it selectively addresses the Geneva communiqué and this other party is not willing to talk about anything else except the question of the transitional governing body,” he told reporters. The Syrian official stressed that fighting terrorism should be the first priority in any talks about the current situation.
He also denounced the US and its allies for their double standards toward terrorism, saying the US refuses to deem as terrorists the groups that serve its interests in the region.
The remarks came on the final day of the second round of the peace talks in Geneva, which were designed to contain the bloody crisis that has plagued Syria since March 2011.
