Syria warns against preconditions for Geneva talks ~ link ~ This is because the Syrians know well the Israeli strategy of 'winning the debate' before the first words are spoken by defining what is to be discussed.   Stirling
US Navy must move toward energy weapons and higher offensive lethality ~ link ~ I agree...at present, the USN has to be very conservative about engagements with an enemy due to major advances in Russian and Chinese weapon systems.   Stirling

Saudi Arabia: The cradel of terror ~ link ~ As violence and senseless bloodshed continue to spread across the Middle East and Asia, fed by sectarian-based hatred and radicalism, never have terrorists in league with al-Qaeda been more powerful and more dangerous.
Three years after Tunisia was set alight by a revolutionary fire calling for democratic change, Zionists have managed to twist the people’s aspirations by turning once peaceful communities against one another, playing Islamic radicalism to the beat of their war drum, seeking only to destroy where people dreamt of unity; Israel and its allies have unleashed onto the region the evil that is apostasy.

But if Israel imagined its plan inevitable by nature due to its diluted sense of superiority over the divided Islamic Ummah, Zionists have failed to grasp the resolve of the men leading the Islamic resistance movement. Three years under unparalleled pressure and Syria has yet to bow to international pressure, its government steadfast in its opposition of Israel’s imperialistic ambitions in the Levant.

Three years after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad first warned the world against al-Qaeda and its masters, the Saudi royals, the world slowly began to grasp the perverted nature of Saudi Arabia.

Just as al-Qaeda was created by the United States of America in Afghanistan to act as a buffer against the then-Soviet forces, radicalism was nurtured in the deserts of Saudi Arabia. For decades, the kingdom has acted as a breeding ground for Islamists, a dark force at the service of an even greater and darker power, Israel.

While the media shrugged President Assad’s warnings, three years of butchery at the hands of the Salafis have silenced the harshest critics, putting Western powers under a less-than-flattering light.

Paris conference on Syria: US and European allies renew push for regime-change ~ link  ~ Top US and European diplomats assembled Sunday in Paris for a two-day meeting of the so-called Friends of Syria group, renewing the push for regime-change in Damascus.
The talks came amid reports that US officials are preparing renewed shipments of supplies to Syrian Islamist opposition forces. Only four months after nearly going to war with Syria and its allies in Lebanon and Iran to support the Al Qaeda-linked Syrian opposition, the NATO powers are again stoking the sectarian conflicts that are inflaming the region.

UK Government guarantees to pay Scotland's debt ~ link ~ In a statement issued on Monday, Britain’s Treasury confirmed its commitment to pay all of the country’s debt, which currently stands at £1.38 trillion, whether or not the Scottish people vote for independence this year.

In November, Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that Scotland will have its independence day on 24 March 2016 if Scottish people vote to break away from the UK in a referendum on 18 September 2014.

Human fatality rate 60%: 'Grave concerns that H5N1 will become easily transmissible between humans' ~ link ~
Canadian health officials have admitted they are confused over how a fit and healthy 20 year old hospital worker has died of H5N1. The Alberta woman was a care worker at the Red Deer regional Hospital. She showed signs of illness on the return flight from Beijing on December 27th and died, in hospital on January 3rd.

The fact that the first case of H5N1 in North America does not seem to have come from direct contact with poultry is worrying doctors and scientists alike. There is no evidence of H5N1 spreading between humans without sustained contact, and questions are being asked about if the flight from Beijing to Edmonton, which takes a touch over 11 hours qualifies as sustained contact. If so, then other passengers may well have been exposed and are at risk from the virus. Symptoms usually show up between two and ten days after exposure to the virus, with the mean average being eight days.

Democrats are attacking the unemployed and the poor ~ linkCongressional Democrats this week publicly offered to join Republicans in cutting back extended benefits for the unemployed and slashing food stamp benefits for the poorest sections of the working class.
On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid advanced a plan to revive federal extended unemployment benefits, which both parties allowed to expire December 28 for 1.3 million long-term jobless. Under the Democratic plan, benefits would be restored for only ten months, until mid-November—conveniently expiring again just days after the 2014 congressional elections.

I always wonder when I see something like this how seriously "thou shall not kill" is to be taken...
