Mr Putin said he thanked God that no big
fragments of the 10-tonne meteor - which was thought to be made of iron
and travelling at some 30 km (19 miles) per second - had fallen in
populated areas.

Russian scientists investigating the meteorite explosion in the Urals
explained the nature of the event that caused havoc in the region. NASA
meanwhile said that the shockwave from the blast was equivalent to a
300-kiloton explosion. The object was identified as a solitary 10-ton bolide by the Russian
Academy of Sciences (RAN). Bolides, or bright fireballs, are large
meteors that explode in the lower atmosphere, and unlike meteorite
showers they can be dangerous, scientists explained.
The
Chelyabinsk fireball entered the atmosphere moving at a speed of about
20 km/s. The object, which was several meters in diameter, then burst
into pieces at a height of 30-50 km above the ground, RAN reported.
Three
consecutive explosions shattered the meteorite further. Large fragments
moving at a high speed caused a powerful flash and a strong shockwave,
with most of its energy released at a height of 5 to 15 km above the
earth, with the atmosphere absorbing most of that energy.

Friday’s meteorite which struck Chelyabinsk carried a mass of around
40 tonnes, possibly making it the largest recorded object to hit the
Earth since Tunguska. It was around 15 meters across when it entered the
atmosphere, according to one expert.
“It was a very, very, powerful event,” astronomer at the University of Ontario, Margaret Campbell-Brown, told Nature.com. But despite its size, it wasn't the meteorite's landing that caused the damage. "The
sonic boom was just immense, and it was the boom that caused the
destruction – not the actual landing of the meteorite. It was the
amazing explosion in the atmosphere as it broke the sound barrier that
caused the problem," Professor of Planetary Science at The Open University, Monica Grady, told RT.
The meteorite – which left more than 1,200 people injured – was undetected until it hit the atmosphere.

Two Russian nuclear-armed bombers circled the western Pacific island
of Guam this week in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing strategic
assertiveness toward the United States.
The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with
nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they
circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack
Obama’s state of the union address.
The bomber incident was considered highly unusual. Russian strategic
bombers are not known to have conducted such operations in the past into

A 49-year-old
unemployed man has set himself on fire in the France’s capital, Paris,
in yet another incident which attests to the gravity of financial crisis
in European countries.
On Friday, the jobless man set himself on fire in front of his home in Saint-Ouen, located some 6.6 kilometers from the capital after being told he was ineligible for unemployment benefits. Reports say that the man was transferred to a hospital for medical treatment.
On Wednesday, an unemployed French man succumbed to injuries he suffered after setting himself on fire in front of the state employment agency in the western city of Nantes.
Reports said that the man had informed the journalists of his decision, warning he would set himself on fire this week.
In August, another jobless man, aged 51, also died of self-immolation in the capital.

One killed, 26 injured in clashes between protesters and Egyptian police ~ link ~ On Friday, thousands of Egyptians held demonstrations against and in support of the government of President Mohamed Morsi in the capital.
Clashes broke out outside the presidential palace after anti-government demonstrators attacked the building with stones and petrol bombs on Friday night, and 13 people were injured. In response, police used tear gas and water cannon to turn back hundreds of people from the president’s residence. Another 13 people were injured in clashes in other parts of Cairo.
The death occurred in Gharbiya governorate, which is located 80 kilometers north of Cairo.

The article, with video, about quantum physics is really interesting. I watched it yesterday and after I had watched it I went to my bookshelfs and had a look at some of my physics books. I'm a professional engineer in mechanical engineering and I also have a master's degree in teaching and English.
But quantum physics is so far out in a world I don't understand, although I am interested in physics (Newton's laws etc.).
Well, the guy looks esoteric with his bandanna. He could tell us everything about quantum physics, because only a small minority understands the theory.
Look at Schrödinger's equations and you know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, it's been a funny and interesting bit of info.
