US plans to establish new Syrian opposition force in Qatar meeting ~ link ~ The old force keeps getting its butt kicked by the Syrians. The US has launched an
aggressive campaign to re-establish a new Syrian opposition force with
its Secretary of State rejecting existing opposition leaders as “a bunch
of out-of-touch exiles” that should be replaced by a group representing
active insurgents.
“We’ve made it clear that the SNC (Syrian National Council) can no longer be viewed as the visible leader of the opposition,” said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday during an official visit to Croatia.
She further declared, “That opposition must include people from inside Syria and others who have a legitimate voice that needs to be heard.”
Clinton’s assertions clearly confirm the leading role of the American government, the closest Israeli ally, in fueling the anti-Syria insurgency aimed at removing the pro-resistance government of President Bashar Al-Assad.
The development comes as hundreds of opposition figures plan to gather in Doha, Qatar, next week in an attempt to establish a new insurgency group, presumably under the auspices of the Arab League but organized in effect by the US government.
Clinton, meanwhile, affirmed that she had been heavily involved in planning the Qatar gathering, including recommending individuals and organizations to include in any new leadership structure, according to a New York Times report.
According to the report, “some analysts are expecting that the United States could become more deeply involved by supplying weapons, including antiaircraft weapons, to the opposition.” Thus far, it adds, the US has insisted that it has only supplied nonlethal aid, “although it has been directing weapons from other states to favorite groups.”
Although the US and its allies are making great efforts to bring out military commanders from Syria for the Qatar meeting next week, there was no guarantee that the overall effort would succeed, the report says, adding that prior attempts to establish a more unified opposition have ended in “spectacular failure, with a similar meeting in Cairo last June descending into acrimonious shouting and fisticuffs.”

Report: US and Israel can't count on Arab support for Iran strike ~ link ~ A report in the Guardian Thursday said that senior American military
officials have warned Israel that if Jerusalem carries out an attack on
Iran, it should not expect any help from Arab countries in the Middle
East. According to the report, the U.S. was recently told by several of
its allies in the Middle East that they would refuse to get involved in
the conflict, not even providing passive assistance, and even if the
U.S. was involved – because of fear of the “Arab street” that would
probably look unkindly on such assistance, and concern that if the
strike was unsuccessful, or only partially succesful, Iran would seek
vengeance against them.

Stuff costs too much. Seriously. Every time I go to the grocery
store these days, I am absolutely horrified by the prices. I try not to
buy anything that is not on sale, but the problem is that I am
discovering that the new sale prices are the old regular prices. So now
paying what used to be "full price" is supposedly a "good deal". The
other way that they are trying to hide rising prices is by shrinking
package sizes. As if we wouldn't notice that a box of 21 garbage bags
is now being sold for the exact same price that a box of 25 garbage
bags used to be sold for. It is one of my pet peeves. I feel like I am
in the middle of some bizarre movie entitled "The Incredible Shrinking
Dollar". Sadly, I am far from alone. There are millions upon millions
of American families that are seeing their expenses continue to rise
even as their paychecks remain the same. But neither Barack Obama nor
Mitt Romney seems very concerned about inflation. In fact, the Federal
Reserve, QE3 and Ben Bernanke were not even mentioned in any of the
three presidential debates. So I think that somebody should start the
"Stuff Costs Too Much" Party. Inflation is a tax which is destroying
the value of each dollar that we hold a little bit more every single
day, and the American people deserve to know the truth about what is
going on.
In this day and age, it simply does not pay to put money into
long-term savings. When you finally pull your money out it will have
far less purchasing power than it originally did.
Way back in 1950, you could buy a first-class stamp for just 3 cents and you could buy a gallon of gasoline for about 27 cents.
Wouldn't it be great if you could still get a gallon of gasoline for 27 cents?
But we don't have to go all the way back to 1950 to find low prices. All we have to do is go back ten years.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) filed suit against the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Tuesday, demanding answers about
how and why it loans out its Predator drones to other law enforcement
agencies across the country.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) – a division of DHS – uses the
unmanned drones inside the U.S. to patrol the borders with surveillance
equipment like video cameras, infrared cameras, heat sensors, and radar.
But recent news articles as well as a report from DHS itself show CBP
is expanding its surveillance work, flying Predator drone missions on
behalf of a diverse group of local, state, and federal law enforcement
agencies – including a county sheriff's department in North Dakota, the
Texas Rangers, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Department of
Defense.
EFF filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request asking for more
information about these drone flights, but DHS has yet to respond to
the request. EFF's lawsuit asks for an immediate response, including
records and logs of CBP drone flights conducted in conjunction with
other agencies.
