Syria bans all Turkish civilian flights over its territory ~ link ~ Syria said on Saturday that it was banning Turkish civilian flights over its territory, just a few days after Turkey intercepted a Syrian airliner carrying what it said were Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army.

A Syrian Foreign Ministry statement carried by the state news agency SANA said the ban will take effect at midnight on Saturday. It said the move was in retaliation for a similar Turkish ban on Syrian flights.

Erdogan hysterical over Syria insurgents' failures says Tarpley - with video ~ link A prominent author says the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has gone hysterical over the defeats inflicted on the insurgents fighting against the Syrian government, Press TV reports.

“He [Erdogan] was told by the United States, he was told repeatedly by Obama in their private telephone conversations that the Syrian government would collapse like a house of cards and he could then emerge as the hero of that regime change,” an author and historian from Washington, Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley said in an interview with Press TV on Saturday

Referring to the October 10 incident, in which Turkish F-16 fighter jets intercepted a Syrian Airbus A320 flying over Turkish airspace and escorted it to Ankara’s Esenboga Airport, Tarpley said the event made Erdogan look like an “unstable, erratic, mercurial kind of leader and not at all what he wanted to be”.

“He [Erdogan] is now gotten himself into this really terrible fix, which of course could be potentially tragic for the world,” he added.

Turkey's hijacking of Syrian airliner raises specter of wider war ~ link ~ The Syrian government condemned Turkey’s action as an act of “air piracy.” SANA, the state news agency, quoted Syrian Arab Airlines Director Ghaida Abdulatif, who charged Turkish authorities with violating international law by forcing down the Syrian Airbus A-320 plane. He added that the close approach of two Turkish F16 fighter planes had nearly caused a midair collision.

She also charged that Turkish security forces had assaulted members of the Syrian aircraft’s crew. This was confirmed by the plane’s flight engineer, Jasem Kaser, at a press conference in Damascus.

When the Music Stops - American cities may explode in violence ~ link
In response to recent articles in mainstream military journals discussing the use of the U.S. Army to quell insurrections on American soil, I offer an alternate vision of the future. Instead of a small town in the South as the flash point, picture instead a score of U.S. cities in the thrall of riots greater than those experienced in Los Angeles in 1965 (Watts), multiple cities in 1968 (MLK assassination), and Los Angeles again in 1992 (Rodney King). New Yorkers can imagine the 1977 blackout looting or the 1991 Crown Heights disturbance. In fact, the proximate spark of the next round of major riots in America could be any from a long list cribbed from our history.

We have seen them all before, and we shall see them all again as history rhymes along regardless of the century or the generation of humankind nominally in control of events. But the next time we are visited by widespread, large-scale urban riots, a dangerous new escalation may be triggered by a fresh vulnerability: It’s estimated that the average American home has less than two weeks of food on hand. In poor minority areas, it may be much less. What if a cascading economic crisis, even a temporary one, leads to millions of EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards flashing nothing but ERROR? This could also be the result of deliberate sabotage by hackers, or other technical system failures. Alternatively, the government might pump endless digits into the cards in a hopeless attempt to outpace future hyperinflation. The government can order the supermarkets to honor the cards, and it can even set price controls, but history’s verdict is clear: If suppliers are paid only with worthless scrip or blinking digits, the food will stop.
