Enough is enough: EU austerity rage in photos - with video ~ link ~ Europe is being wracked by strikes and mass anti-austerity demonstrations ahead of Thursday’s EU summit in Brussels. Thousands took to the streets in Spain, Greece and France to protest against harsh budget cuts. In Greece, the largest labor unions have called for work to stop from 12 am till 3 pm local time on Wednesday with a large demonstration taking place in Athens at 6 pm.

France's five main unions also agreed to a mass strike and demonstration on Wednesday. Some 160 protest marches are taking place across France this week alone. Spanish students have held anti-austerity rallies in 40 cities with the largest demonstrations taking place in Madrid and Barcelona.

Hundreds of trade union members also gathered in front of the European Union headquarters in Brussels demanding policy changes from the summit leaders.

Here in the United States, growing numbers of people can't afford that most basic of necessities: food.

More Americans said they struggled to buy food in 2011 than in any year since the financial crisis, according to a recent report from the Food Research and Action Center, a nonprofit research group. About 18.6 percent of people -- almost one out of every five -- told Gallup pollsters that they couldn't always afford to feed everyone in their family in 2011.

When Spain joined the euro, the EU Central Bank settled overly low interest rates, resulting in Spain receiving “enormous amounts of credit which increased Spanish indebtedness, particularly foreign”. Cheap money created financial bubbles, for instance in real estate.

When the 2008 economic crisis came, the bubbles burst, many companies went bankrupt and the whole overheated economy blew up, explains the professor.

Obama promises Israel use of bases for Iran Attack if it will wait ~ link ~ Now, Israel’s two top leaders head to Washington for separate sets of talks in the coming days.  Bibi comes for his annual triumphal curtain call before the Aipac national conference.  There he will certainly repeat his baleful predictions of what a world with Iranian nukes would be like.  It could be his last speech in this country before an Israeli attack.

It’s uncertain what he will discuss with Pres. Obama, with whom he will meet.  The president seems more the supplicant than the officiant in this relationship.  He doesn’t want Israel to attack.  But both he and Bibi know that he doesn’t have the will to stop him.  It feels to me like possibly the final stop on the way to war.

The United States is drawing up a new draft UN Security Council resolution on Syria demanding humanitarian access to protest cities where thousands have been killed, diplomats said Tuesday.

If put to a vote it would be the third time Western nations have tried to get a Security Council resolution on the 11 month old crisis.

US military draws up further Syrian options ~ link ~ Detailed plans developed to carry out military action against Syria have been drawn up by the Pentagon and could be implemented upon orders by President Barack Obama, CNN, quoting a senior U.S. official, has reported.

 

The crucial progress in military planning comes after several weeks of initial analysis by the Pentagon of what the official says are a "full range of options," CNN said. “The detailed plans for each option include more precise concepts of how a variety of operations could be carried out, as well as estimates of the numbers of personnel, types of units and military equipment and weapons that could potentially be needed,” the report published Tuesday said.

France and US arming Syrian opposition ~ link ~ From Day One!   Stirling   

In Homs on Tuesday, a general claiming to be from the rebel group appeared on camera and told a journalist from Reuters news agency that “French and American assistance has reached us and is with us.” When asked to elaborate on the nature of the assistance he added, "We now have weapons and anti-aircraft missiles and, God willing, with all of that we will defeat Bashar [President Assad]."

The international community maintains it is committed to finding a political solution to the conflict and had rejected the idea of military intervention. However, there are growing suspicions that it has been supplying the opposition with weapons indirectly.   

This is not the first report of the US covertly supplying the opposition with arms. In December, FBI translator turned whistleblower Sibel Edmonds said she believed the US had been training the Syrian opposition in neighboring Turkey and supplying arms to the country from Incirlik military base close to the Turkish-Syrian border. In addition, Qatar and Saudi Arabia reportedly held secret meetings to offer financial support to the Syrian rebels to buy weapons.
