Online SOPA Strike to Continue as White House Backs Down ~ link ~This site will be down on 18 January 2012 (unless there is an outbreak of war in the Middle East or something of this nature) in support of the Stop SOPA/PIPA Strike.
Tim Earl of Stirling

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. probably never would have imagined a day when civil rights demonstrations would take place on the Internet, but such a day has arrived.

In the never-ending quest to protect free speech and freedom of the Internet, the international hacktivist collective known as "
Anonymous" and others have called for a general strike to take place on the Internet between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST on January 18, 2012.

Social news aggregator Reddit, online encyclopedia Wikipedia and others will be shutting down for 12 hours on January 18 to protest freedom-choking bills such as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA).

"We're not taking this action lightly. We wouldn’t do this if we didn’t believe this legislation and the forces behind it were a serious threat to reddit and the Internet as we know it." — Reddit administration team

The SOPA strike is set to occur on the same day that Congress will be hearing witnesses such as Reddit's co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, voice their concerns about SOPA and PIPA before the US House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

"They said 'bring in the nerds,' so I'm headed to DC to testify about SOPA/PIPA." — Alexis Ohanian, Reddit co-founder and technology investor

The online strike is set to continue despite this weekend's statement from the White Housecontending that it would not "support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet." (Joint statement prepared by: Victoria Espinel, Aneesh Chopra, Howard Schmidt.)

"We have no indication that SOPA is fully off the table. PIPA is still alive and kicking. We need to send Washington a BIG message." — Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia Founder

The Twitter hashtag "#J18" has become the rallying cry for Twitter users who support the January 18 SOPA blackout and have committed to refraining from sending out tweets on that day.

SOPA strikers and their supporters have created various tools for people to show support, such as:

Internet advocacy group,
Fight For the Future, created a SopaStrike page, where anyone who is interested can see which websites are currently participating in Wednesday's strike.

In the meantime, the powerful media mogul and SOPA-supporter, Rupert Murdoch, has been madly tweeting anti-SOPA messages via his Twitter account, causing
Technorati blogger, Stephen Alexander, to speculate: "So just like Oprah Winfrey was sued and had her mouth tamed by the beef industry, perhaps Google could sue Mr. Murdoch and tame his mouth."

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream.

We, the people who use and benefit from the free-flow of information on the Internet, have a dream, too.

We have a dream that the Internet will one day be free from greedy and contentious elements who would co-opt it and corral it toward their own ends.

We have a dream that the Internet will one day be freely accessible to all without fear of reprisals, recriminations, or "indefinite detention."

We have a dream that one day freedom will ring across the Internet and into homes, businesses, governments and enterprises everywhere.

And when that day comes?

Thank God Almighty. We will be free at last.

Wikiout!  English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout looms ~ link ~ The world’s most popular online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, is going on strike on Wednesday. The “knowledge blackout” is aimed at protecting the Internet - and the website’s very existence – from online censorship. The Wikipedia community and the Wikimedia foundation decided on a global blackout of the English version of the website for 24 hours starting at 05:00 UTC on January 18. The move followed a heated discussion which attracted the highest number of participants in the project’s 11-year history.
The blackout of one of the Internet’s most-visited places is meant to stop SOPA and PIPA, two controversial anti-piracy bills currently on the table in the US Congress. The bills, if they pass into law, would greatly increase the powers of law enforcement agencies and copyright holders to prosecute online infringement.

The bills would cripple the Internet, effectively killing all websites allowing user-uploaded content, endangering potential whistleblowers and severely damaging online freedom of speech, say its numerous opponents. Those include Internet giants Google, Yahoo, Facebook, AOL, Mozilla Corporation, and the human rights organizations Reporters Without Borders, Human Rights Watch and the ACLU, as well as journalists, lawyers and many others.

Raw Story to go dark on January 18 to protest SOPA/PIPA ~ link ~ Going dark is a radical step for an online-only news organization, and it is one that Raw Story’s management doesn’t take lightly. It wasn’t easy to tell our reporters and editors to take time off tomorrow and pretend that the news isn’t happening. But we’d rather tell them to take tomorrow easy and come back twice as strong on Thursday than have to tell them later that the government pulled the plug on our whole organization because of SOPA/PIPA — on which we once reported as though it didn’t affect us as much as our readers.

If you’re as concerned as we are, there’s something you can do, too. Click here to find and email your Representative (use the little envelope icon that appears to the right of the picture) and here to find and email your Senators (use the “Web form” link). Tell them you don’t support SOPA/PIPA or the politicians who do, and ask them to vote against the legislation if given the opportunity.

Joint US-Israeli 'War Drill' was called off by Netanyahu, to Washington's surprise ~ link ~ I note that now Defka is changing its story.  They may be right this time but something still does not feel right about all of this to me.   I don't think that the United States has moved two combat mechanized brigades and a aviation brigade into Kuwait, moved thousands of air force troops and our latest high tech air defense missiles into Israel, and three super-carrier battle groups, plus multiple assault carrier battle groups into position off the Strait of Hormuz just 'for the hell of it'.  This force, plus the French carrier battle group and the Royal Navy anti-air defense destroyer/s are in place to wage war on Iran/Syria/Lebanon/Palestine/Gaza.  In fact the accidental French Air Force jet fighter-bomber collision with a Royal Saudi Air Force F-15 was a eye opening into joint training for NATO nuclear strikes against Iran and Syria.  I suspect that the war preparations are on schedule and the rest is psych-ops.  Stirling

debkafile's sources disclose exclusively that, contrary to recent reports published in Washington, Jerusalem - and this site too - it was Israel Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, not the Obama administration, who decided to call off the biggest ever joint US-Israeli military exercise Austere Challenge 12 scheduled for April 2012.

Washington was taken aback by the decision. It was perceived as a mark of Israel's disapproval for the administration's apparent hesitancy in going through with the only tough sanctions with any chance of working against Iran's nuclear weapon program: penalizing its central bank and blocking payments for its petroleum exports.

This week, Netanyahu further orchestrated a series of uncharacteristically critical statements by senior ministers: Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon called the Obama administration "hesitant" (Jan. 15), after which Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman urged the Americans to "move from words to deeds" (Jan 16).

Israel ready to strike Iran without Washington's approval?  ~ link ~ Both American and Israeli officials say that the decision to postpone a massive joint missile drill scheduled for this spring has nothing to do with hostilities with Iran, although insiders suggest something quite the contrary.

Only last month, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the planned joint exercise served as the Obama administration’s “unprecedented levels of defense cooperation with Israel to back up our unshakable commitment to Israel’s security.” Just weeks later, however, Netanyahu seems ready to fight Iran on its own.

Russia: An Attack on Tehran Is An Attack On Moscow ~ link ~  When President Kennedy said much the same (an attack on America from Cuba would be considered an attack from the USSR) the World took him very seriously.  He meant it!  I am concerned that similar Russian warnings are being ignored by the West.  We are at a place that is even more dangerous than the Cuban Missile Crisis was almost half a century ago...and that almost ended the human experience!   Stirling

Russia has given Iran its bear hug and warns Israel and the West that an attack on Tehran would be considered an attack on Moscow. The threat heightens the prospect of World War III in the event of a military strike on Iran.

“Iran is our neighbor,” Russia's outgoing ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, told reporters in Brussels. “And if Iran is involved in any military action, it’s a direct threat to our security."  Kremlin Security Council head Nikolai Patrushev accused Israel of provoking the United States towards war against Iran, the Russian Interfax news agency reported Friday. “But at the same time, we believe that any country has the right to have what it needs to feel comfortable, including Iran," he added.

Russian Missile Forces Hold High Alert Drills ~ link ~ This is a warning...is anyone in the West listening??? Stirling

Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces are holding a series of exercises to practice putting road-mobile missile systems on high alert, SMF spokesman Col. Vadim Koval said.

The exercises involve Topol (SS-25 Sikle), Topol-M (SS-27 Sickle B) and Yars (RS-24) mobile systems stationed in central Russia and Siberia.

“SMF units armed with Topol, Topol-M and Yars road-mobile missile systems will practice patrolling, camouflaging and launch preparation procedures during high alert drills from January 16 to February 3,” Koval told reporters on Monday.
