Two new US carrier battle groups now in Middle East - USS Carl Vinson super-carrier and USS Makin Island assault carrier ~ link ~ A key thing to watch is the number and scope of carrier battle groups in the Middle East. We now have at least two super-carrier battle groups there, and three assault carrier battle groups, the French have a carrier battle group, as do the Russians, and the British have send some top-of-the-line air-defense destroyers in. Of course, there are a large number of massive airbases that allied forces can use in the Middle East. Forces continue to build! Stirling
The Vinson group – which also includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey, and Carrier Air Wing 17 – left San Diego on Nov. 30 and will support Operation Enduring Freedom, conduct maritime security operations and train with other navies in the region.
