Australia floods: 72 missing and at least eight dead - with video ~ link ~
Officials in the Australian state of Queensland say at least 72 people are missing after flash floods which have already claimed eight lives. A massive deluge overwhelmed Toowoomba, a city west of the state capital Brisbane, without warning. Sandbags have been given out to residents of Brisbane, where the flooding may not peak until Wednesday.

State Premier Anna Bligh called the flash floods Queensland's "darkest hour" since the flood crisis began.
At least two of the dead were children, Ms Bligh said, and she warned that the death toll was likely to rise. "The event that started in Toowoomba can only be described as a complete freak of nature, an extraordinary deluge that almost came out of nowhere," the Australian Broadcasting Corporation quoted Ms Bligh as saying. "What we have here in Queensland tonight is a very grim and desperate situation."

Winter storm hits southern US with snow, sleet and rain ~ link ~ This is rare for most of the areas involved.  The local governments do not have much in the way of snow removal equipment because they never have any snow.  Stirling

A man in the downtown area of the town of Asheville in North Carolina skiing on a road As much as 9in (23cm) of snow has blanketed states in the south-eastern US
Freezing rain and sleet have caused power outages, icy roads and school closures in the south-eastern US, following a snow storm that struck in the region over the weekend. As much as 9in (23cm) of snow has blanketed states from Louisiana to North Carolina. At least eight people have died in weather-related car crashes in the area over the past few days.

The winter mix is expected to turn to ice by Tuesday, forecasters said. "Since it's going to be pretty cold over the next few days, we could see whatever accumulates sticking around for a few days," National Weather Service meteorologist Daniel Lamb told the Associated Press news agency. Governors in the states of Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee declared emergencies, while many schools in the south called off classes on Monday because of the storm.

Atlanta, which does not typically receive heavy amounts of snow, has only eight snow ploughs. Since the storm struck on Sunday, covering bridges and roads, the city has hired 11 trucks to help spread salt and gravel around the region. But the heaviest snow fell in Tennessee, coating parts of the state with about 13in.

Southern China to endure more freezing weather, blizzards and sleet ~ link ~ Just as in the southern part of America, the southern part of China simply does NOT see these kind of weather conditions with rare exceptions.  Something is happening GLOBALLY.  Stirling

Another cold snap threatens to freeze parts of southern China this week, adding to the traffic disruptions caused by the snow and icy rain that have fallen since New Year's Day. From Sunday until Thursday, most of Guizhou province, and parts of neighboring Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Yunnan province, will experience more icy rain, the National Meteorological Center forecast on Sunday.  Heavy snow will fall in most parts of Central China's Hunan province, it said.  Snow is also expected in some areas in Hubei and Jiangxi provinces, the forecast said.

Thousands of vehicles lined up along dozens of kilometers on a major national highway in Zhaotong city in Yunnan as ice covered the road, trapping the vehicles, local police said. Police banned driving along an icy section of the highway between Zhaotong's Zhaoyang district and Daguan county after sunset and tried to clear the icy section by section in the daylight.

South slips and slides in seldom- seen snow ~ link ~ Southerners more accustomed to sunshine than snow began digging out Monday from a wintry blast that stranded drivers and air travelers, cut power to thousands of homes, and even forced Auburn University to cancel viewing parties for the college football national championship game.
Snow ranging from several inches to more than a foot blanketed states from Louisiana to the Carolinas — a region where many cities have only a small number of snowplows, if any. And more misery was on the way: The snow began turning to freezing rain in many areas, threatening to make untreated roads even more treacherous. The same storm system was expected to move into the Washington, D.C., area by Tuesday afternoon.

This car in Charlotte, N.C., was among the hundreds that slid off icy roads across the South on Monday.
Much of the South was expecting freezing rain overnight from a storm that caused at least 8 traffic deaths and forced the world's busiest airport to come to a near standstill. Snow ranging from several inches to more than a foot blanketed states from Louisiana to the Carolinas — a region where many cities have only a handful of snow plows, if any.

Storm may unfold into ALL-OUT BLIZZARD in New England ~ link ~ The storm now slamming the South with severe snow and ice will turn up the Eastern Seaboard on Tuesday into Wednesday, hugging the coast and dumping several inches of snow over many major cities in the Northeast.

In fact, it is looking more likely that the storm will rapidly intensify around Cape Cod on Wednesday as another storm that will first dump snow over the Midwest joins forces with the coastal storm.

Winter storms sweep through Southern US ~ link
The National Weather Service posted winter storm warnings from east Texas to the Carolinas. Daniel Lamb, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said heavy snow had fallen from Arkansas to north Mississippi. Other areas of the South saw freezing rain and sleet. By Sunday night, snow was falling from Memphis to Birmingham to Atlanta.

Forecasters expected the most extreme conditions in Mississippi and northern Louisiana overnight with the possibility of heavy ice accumulation in places, including in the Atlanta metro area. Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas were expecting icy weather overnight.

Southerners struggle to dig out from heavy snow ~ link  The heaviest snow fell in parts of Tennessee that received as much as 13 inches. The weather began rolling across the South on Sunday, coating bridges and roads with snow, sleet and freezing rain. The governors of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee declared emergencies. Schools and colleges called off classes.

More than 2,000 flights were canceled around the South — affecting passengers as far away as Scandinavia — and Atlanta's airport was nearly deserted on what would normally be a busy Monday morning. For those whose flights made it to Atlanta, the sight of snow-covered runways was disorienting. Larry and Judy Keefauver, of Buffalo, N.Y., thought their flight from Sacramento had landed somewhere else when they looked out the window. "I have been flying (through Atlanta) since the early '70s, and I've never landed on snow here ever," said Larry Keefauver, 62.

Snow and ice leave four dead, shut down Deep South ~ link ~ Georgia and Alabama declared states of emergency, and authorities closed schools and government offices across Georgia and in parts of Alabama, South Carolina and Mississippi. "We are seeing the ice accumulation across the middle part of the state increasing so roads are deteriorating. But hopefully the lack of folks on the road will lessen the need for emergency services," said Ken Davis, spokesman for Georgia Emergency Management Agency.
The storm was expected to move north up the coast to the northeast, where a winter storm watch was in effect for late Tuesday and early Monday, forecasters said. Boston could get hit with 12 to 15 inches of snow, and New York City could get 6 to 12 inches, the National Weather Service said.
The storm battering the south was likely to mix with an upper level disturbance in the northern Great Plains heading east, producing heavy snow, winds and low visibility, forecasters said. "It's a complex system," NWS meteorologist Rick Watling said. "Those two are going to interact with each other."

New York has barely dug out from the Christmas weekend blizzard, which dumped 20 inches on December 26 and 27.

Flash floods hit Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia - with video ~ link Flash floods have hit Queensland, killing at least eight people with many more missing, as heavy rains continue to pound the Australian state. Riots Shake Tunisia and Algeria ~ link ~ Both nations are nearing or are already in  a pre-revolution state.  Stirling
Police repression of mass protests in Tunisia and Algeria last week has led to the deaths of over a dozen people, with hundreds injured. There was rioting against food price increases and state subsidy cuts across Algeria, amid ongoing demonstrations in Tunisia against unemployment and the regime of Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

The Algerian protests reflect deepening mass opposition to the free-market policies of the army-backed regime of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, of the National Liberation Front (FLN). Prices of essential, state-subsidized food items including flour, cooking oil, and sugar have doubled in the past few months in Algeria. World market prices are rising, and the state has tried to pass part of the price increase through to grocers and consumers.

More broadly, the protests reflect mass anger at terrible social conditions in Algeria. According to the International Monetary Fund, 75 percent of the Algerian population is under 25; they face a 30 percent unemployment rate. The state is also trying to impose a 17 percent sales tax on street vendors in Algeria’s large informal sector.

After reports of sporadic rioting throughout the country, there was large-scale rioting in Algeria’s major cities at the end of last week.

Unrest deepened in Tunisia over the weekend, amid reports of pitched battles between protestors and sections of the security forces.

The BBC wrote that 14 people were killed in two cities, Kasserine and Tala. Tunisia’s official TAP news agency released a statement saying: “Several government buildings in Kasserine were attacked by groups who set fire to and destroyed three banks, a police station, and a filling station, and set fire to a police vehicle.” Four people were reported killed in Regueb.

The protests started when an unemployed university graduate working as an itinerant vegetable seller, Mohamed Bouazizi, set himself on fire in front of government offices in Sidi Bouzid to protest the police’s confiscation of his stock. Police claimed that he did not have a permit to sell vegetables. Bouazizi died on January 4.

AFP reported that the marchers at the funeral chanted: “Farewell, Mohammed, we will avenge you. We weep for you today, we will make those who caused your death weep.”

His uncle, Mehdi Horchani, told AFP: “Mohammed gave his life to draw attention to his condition and that of his brothers.” As in Algeria, Tunisia faces a crisis of youth unemployment, as the state’s free-market policies have slashed jobs and made it virtually impossible to obtain employment without personal connections or paying bribes.

Le Monde wrote: “In the strongly state-supported economy, an advanced degree used to guarantee a stable job, often in the state or para-state sector. But things changed with the major structural reforms of the post-Bourguiba era,” with unemployment rising rapidly in the late 1990s. The youth unemployment rate is now comparable to Algeria’s.

A French businessman in Tunisia told Le Monde: “Here it’s not rare to be served at a gas station by someone with a master’s degree in sociology. Cleaning women have English degrees, the fruit vendor has a doctorate in mathematics, and so on.”

Trying to disrupt the organization of protests and halt media reporting, the Tunisian government is clamping down on the Internet. It blocked secure access to Facebook and web mail applications last week; journalists and political activists in Tunisia have reported that their accounts have since been hacked and taken over.

Tunisia closes schools and universities following riots ~ linkTunisia and neighboring Algeria have been having rioting for some days.  There are a number of causes including high food prices.  Notice the BBC is no longer listing food prices as a cause, even in Algeria.  The powers that be are, at least at some levels, getting concerned.  The current climate crisis is causing a grave shortfall in the amount of food to feed the billions of people on this planet.  If we are not very lucky, we could lose a billion or two billion human beings to starvation over the next year or two.  Stirling
Tunisian police in Regueb, 10 January 2011 Protests in Tunisia have been continuing since December
The Tunisian government has ordered all schools and universities to be indefinitely closed following continuing violent protests. The announcement came after students marched in the capital, Tunis, to protest against police violence. At least 14 people were killed over the weekend in the protests. They have been linked to anger over unemployment and frustrations with the ruling elite.

The protests in Tunisia have coincided with similar unrest in Algeria linked to unemployment, the cost of living, and political frustrations.

World risks food riots as grains climb, economist Chalmin says ~ link ~ The world may face social unrest including food riots in April as grain prices increase, said Philippe Chalmin, an economic adviser to the French government. Crop damage caused by flooding in Australia and drought in Argentina is likely to boost grain prices in coming months, Chalmin, an economics professor at the University of Paris- Dauphine, said in an interview in the French capital today. “I’m very concerned,” Chalmin said. “Around Easter we could start to see food riots.”

World food prices advanced to a record in December, partly driven by higher sugar prices, the United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization reported yesterday. The FAO’s cereal index rose to the highest level since August 2008, remaining about 37 points below the record level in April that year. Corn prices rose 52 percent in Chicago last year, while wheat climbed 47 percent. Grain prices may rise further because of uncertainty about production in South America, FAO senior economist Abdolreza Abbassian said yesterday

Sovereign debt fears will spread to US and Japan warns Citigroup's Willem Buiter ~ link ~ Worries about the risk of a sovereign state defaulting on its debt, which thrust the eurozone into crisis, will soon encompass the two major economies as well, according to Citigroup economists led by Mr Buiter, who sat on the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee.

"Despite the recent drama, we believe we have only seen the opening and second act, with the rest of the plot still evolving," the team wrote. "There is no absolutely safe sovereigns." There are likely to be several sovereign debt restructurings in the next few years, the analysts said, with Portugal likely to need to access the emergency funding facilities soon. Against this backdrop, the US and Japan - dubbed the "fiscal sustainability deniers" - cannot keep ignoring the question of how safe their public finances are, the team said.

Citigroup could face a $22 BILLION LOSS on 'put back mortgage' bonds ~ link ~ How about criminal charges against the officers and senior management of Citigroup!!!  Stirling

This is another in our series of articles from late 2010, that we are reposting in the wake of Friday's landmark foreclosure ruling from the Massachusetts Supreme Court.

Now that Bank of America has been hit with a giant lawsuit from mortgage bond investors demanding the bank repurchase loans, investors will scramble to figure out the levels of exposure at every other major bank. So how large is Citigroup’s exposure? Using some figures from Citi’s earning’s presentation and financial analyst Dick Bove, I’ve concluded that as much as $58 billion in bubble-era home loans packaged in mortgage backed securities serviced by Citi have or will likely default. Citi may be liable for buying back as much as $35 billion of the loans. After recovering some of that through foreclosure sales, Citi may be looking at a loss of $22 billion.

Fear and Loathing on Wall Street - Catastrophic Implications for Banks of the Ibanez Case Ruling ~ linkGo to the link and read all of this most important article.  I have some excerpts below.  Stirling

The Too Big To Fail banks have been waiting with trepidation for a ruling from the Supreme Judicial Court of the State of Massachusetts on the case titledUS Bank National Association (as trustee) vs. Antonio Ibanez. They were right to be fearful. The state supreme court has ruled against the banks and upheld a lower court order that nullified foreclosures by US Bancorp and Wells Fargo, on the grounds that neither bank had the legal right under Massachusetts law to foreclose. Today’s ruling has far-reaching consequences for the banks and the housing market in general, as it throws into serious question the legal soundness of millions of mortgages in the US if, as expected, courts in other states come to similar conclusions as the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.

The Ibanez case tied together two separate but similar foreclosure actions in Massachusetts, the second case being that of Wells Fargo vs. Mark and Tammy LaRace. Both foreclosures took place on the same day, the banks having previously published their intention to foreclose in a local newspaper as required by law. The banks then purchased the properties at prices described by the court as significantly below market value. About a year after the foreclosures (in autumn of 2008) the banks then applied to the local Land Court for a ruling that in each foreclosure, the bank had full legal right to foreclose as mortgagee, that the bank title to the property was “unclouded” by any other contesting right, and that the bank therefore owned the property in what is legally known as “fee simple” status. These claims were contested by the property owners who had lost their homes in the foreclosure, and the Land Court agreed with the homeowners that the foreclosures had been invalid. Critical to the decision of the Land Court was the fact that both banks admitted that they did not receive assignment of the mortgage to the property until after the foreclosure.

These investors want 100% of their money back, which would lead to claims of trillions of dollars against the big banks.
This means that the big banks will become direct mortgagee not only for the properties in their portfolio now, but for millions more that they must buy back. This could constitute much more than half of all homes/mortgages in the US, of which over 3% are now already in default.

What is beginning to unfold before our eyes is a situation which can only be comprehended with jaw-dropping incredulity. For at least ten years the large US banks have been selling a product – the residential home mortgage – with a fatal legal flaw that renders it uncollateralized. The product should have been priced like any other unsecured consumer loan – at rates at least triple the actual mortgage rate in the US. There are something like $6 trillion of mortgages extant in the US, among over 55 million borrowers. Most of these mortgages have been grossly underpriced, and at existing default rates, there is simply not enough equity capital in the banking system – and not enough profit being generated by mortgage portfolios - to absorb current losses. Even if you assume the banks don’t have to take a full 100% loss on a home default, and that some portion of the home sale after bankruptcy will eventually trickle down to the bank as a general creditor, the Too Big To Fail banks are doomed to insolvency.
You may throw into this picture also the Federal Reserve System, which chose to buy over one trillion dollars of mortgage backed securities from the banks in 2008 and 2009, and which is itself technically insolvent if this portfolio turns out to be uncollateralized, as is becoming increasingly likely.

With increasing desperation, banks along with their enablers in Washington are going to try to jerry-rig a way out of this problem. Unfortunately for the banks, ex post facto laws are strictly forbidden by the Constitution, which is now being treated with new-found reverence by the Congress. It may be impossible to construct a law that solves problems like this that already exist.

This means that the likely progression of events – the path we are now on - will lead to a near complete collapse of the housing market, because the big banks and the two government enterprises responsible for supporting the housing market will be fatally crippled wards of the state. The US government itself, including the Federal Reserve, will be equally crippled. Try as you might, you will find no words in the Bible – no phrases applicable to The Flood or to the destruction of whole cities at the hands of a vengeful God – that appropriately capture the financial gravity of this situation. But if we are forced to come up with some metaphor, Financial Armageddon will have to do.

Jon Stewart on Bank Bailouts and Foreclosure Fraud - video ~ link ~ Funny!

US Federal Judge orders Federal Reserve to deliver gold records for her review ~ link GATA today scored a small but perhaps auspicious victory over the Federal Reserve in our lawsuit seeking access to the Fed's secret gold files. The judge presiding over GATA's federal freedom-of-information lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Ellen Segal Huvelle, granted GATA's motion to order the Fed to produce in complete form for the judge's private review 20 gold-related documents the Fed has sought to keep secret. The judge ordered the Fed to deliver the documents by Friday.

Through its lawyers, William J. Olson P.C. of Vienna, Virginia -- -- GATA has argued that the Fed's production of gold-related documents has been so inadequate and the Fed's arguments for keeping them secret so weak that the court should review the documents acknowledged by the Fed and order the Fed to answer 25 questions from GATA about the Fed's search for relevant information.

While Judge Huvelle still could grant at any time the Fed's motion to dismiss GATA's lawsuit, her ruling today at least implies a little skepticism about the Fed and its tactics. Combined with today's statement by U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, the new chairman of the House Financial Services Committee's Subcommittee on Monetary Policy (, Judge Huvelle's ruling gives hope that the Fed's enormous secret power to rig markets and bestow the most fantastic patronage on a parasitic financial elite can be brought to account eventually.

The judge's order to the Fed to produce documents for her private review can be found at GATA's Internet site here:

Those who are skeptical of GATA's complaint that the Federal Reserve is part of an international gold-price rigging scheme should reflect on the meaning of the Fed's refusal to disclose all its gold-related records, records that include gold swap arrangements with foreign banks:

If the U.S. gold reserves are just sitting somewhere, inert, unencumbered, and unused for surreptitious market intervention, what's the problem with full disclosure?

Behold the Storm and All the Mad People - with video ~ link ~ POWERFUL VIDEO!

Egon von Greyerz writes, “We now live in a world where governments print worthless pieces of paper to buy other worthless pieces of paper that, combined with worthless derivatives, finance assets whose values are totally dependent on all these worthless debt instruments. Thus most of these assets are also worthless. So the world financial system is a house of cards where each instrument’s false value is artificially supported by another instrument’s false value. The fuse of the world financial market time bomb has been lit. There is no longer a question of IF it will happen but only WHEN and HOW. The world lives in blissful ignorance of this.”
Ben Bernanke, Timothy Geithner, Barack Obama, the Wall
Street banks, and the corporate mainstream media are playing a giant
confidence game. It is a desperate gamble. The plan has been to
convince the population of the US that the economy is in full recovery mode.

-The Burning Platform-
“First, the global economy is in dire straits and riding the wave of a convoluted ‘recovery’ built on fiat and fantasy. So to get to the point (as if it is not painfully obvious); there is no recovery! I don’t care how often CNBC, MSNBC, FOX, or CNN, pull skewed data and automaton analysts from their ghastly dungeon of disinformation, the fundamental dysfunctions of the American economy remain unchanged. The key here is the dollar and its inevitable demise, which the establishment is trying desperately to hide until the last possible moment. Over the next year we are likely to be buried in a deluge of excuses, half-truths, and lies, all meant to divert attention away from the word ‘inflation’ as the masses begin to question just what the hell is going on,” writes Giordano Bruno. The mainstream financial press as usual will be used as a tool to mislead the public even as the storm hits them broadside.

NYC Comptroller John Liu: $432 Billion Pension Fund Coalition demands bank directors IMMEDIATELY examine foreclosure practices ~ linkA coalition of seven major public pension systems called on the boards of directors of Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Citigroup (NYSE: C), JP Morgan Chase (NYSE: JPM), and Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) to immediately undertake independent examinations of the banks’ mortgage and foreclosure practices.

Led by New York City Comptroller John C. Liu on behalf of the five NYC Pension Funds, the coalition also includes the Connecticut Retirement Plans and Trust Funds, the Illinois State Board of Investment, the Illinois State Universities Retirement System, the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the North Carolina Retirement Systems, and the Oregon Public Employees Retirement Fund.

The coalition of pension funds called for the banks’ Audit Committees to launch independent examinations of their loan modification, foreclosure, and securitization policies and procedures. “This will help to prevent future compliance failures and restore the confidence of shareholders, regulators, legislators and mortgage markets participants,” the coalition advised in its letter.

the fish would die in the streams,
the birds would fall from the air,

the waters would be blackened, and the trees would no longer be. Mankind as we would know it would all but cease to exist.
There would come a time when the "keepers of the legend, stories, culture rituals, and myths, and all the Ancient Tribal Customs" would be needed to restore us to health. They would be mankind's key to survival, they would be known as the "Warriors of the Rainbow". There would come a day of awakening when all the peoples of all the tribes would form a New World of Justice, Peace, Freedom and recognition of the Great Spirit.
