French unions have called two more national days of action to protest at the goverment's pension reforms.
They announced the dates of 28 October and 6 November after a meeting in Paris on Thursday afternoon.
*French protesters clash with police ~ link ~ France has witnessed another day of confrontations as protestors blocked key sites and clashed with police amid calls by unions for further nationwide protests over plans by the government to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62.
The country's senate is expected to vote on changes to the pensions system on Friday, but Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland, reporting from Paris, the capital, said that the main constituents of the bill have already been passed.
Youths meanwhile have been clashing with riot police in several cities.
A schoolgirl was taken to hospital on Thursday during clashes with police outside a high school in the central city of Poitiers.
Police in Lyon fired tear gas when a group of around 200 high school students tried to join a demonstration organised by the CGT, the country's main union.
Five youths were arrested in Nice after stones were thrown at police during a demonstration outside a high school.
Unions said 35,000 people took to the streets of the southern city of Toulouse on Thursday, although officials put the figure closer to 8,000.
At least 4,000 high school students marched through the capital, with student union leaders vowing to continue protesting despite half-term holidays which start on Friday.

Rowland said that the presence of youths on the streets may decrease as the holidays approach.
Pension Reform
Under current rules, the French can retire at 60, providing they have paid social security contributions for 40.5 years.
Retirees are entitled to a full pension when they are 65.
The planned reform would raise the minimum retirement age to 62 by 2018, the qualification to 41.5 years, and the pension age to 67.
Officials say the reforms would save about $95bn.

The French system is based on solidarity between generations, in that the cotisations of today’s workers go to pay today’s retired people’s pensions. The government has subtly tried to pit one generation against another, by claiming that it is necessary to protect the future of today’s youth, who are paying for the “baby boom” pensioners. It is therefore extremely significant that this week, high school and university students massively began to enter the protest strike movement. This solidarity between generations is a major blow to the government.
The youth are even much more radical than the older trade unionists. They are very aware of the increasing difficulty of building a career. The trend is for qualified personnel to enter the work force later and later, having spent years getting an education. With the difficulty of finding a stable, full-time job, many depend on their parents until age 30. It is simple arithmetic to see that in this case, there will be no full retirement until after age 70.
As has become standard practice, the authors of the neo-liberal reforms present them not as a choice but as a necessity. There is no alternative. We must compete on the global market. Do it our way or we go broke. And this reform was essentially dictated by the European Union, in a 2003 report, concluding that making people work longer was necessary to cut pension costs.
These dictates prevent any discussion of the two basic factors underlying the pension problem: productivity and de-industrialization.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the former Socialist Party man who heads the relatively new Left Party, is about the only political leader to point out that even if there are fewer workers to contribute to pension schemes, the difference can be made up by the rise in productivity. Indeed, French worker productivity is among the very highest in the world (higher than Germany, for example). Moreover, although France has the second longest life expectancy in Europe, it also has the highest birth rate. And even if jobholders are fewer, because of unemployment, the wealth they produce should be adequate to maintain pension levels.
Aha, but here’s the catch: for decades, as productivity goes up, wages stagnate. The profits from increased productivity are siphoned off into the financial sector. The bloating of the financial sector and the stagnation of purchasing power has led to the financial crisis – and the government has preserved the imbalance by bailing out the profligate financiers.
So logically, preserving the pension system basically calls for raising wages to account for higher productivity – a very major policy change.
But there is another critical problem linked to the pension issue: de-industrialization. In order to maintain the high profits drained by the financial sector, and avoid paying higher wages, one industry after another has moved its production to cheap labor countries. Profitable enterprises shut down as capital goes looking for even higher profit.
Is this merely the inevitable result of the rise of new industrial powers in Asia? Is a lowering of living standards in the West inevitable due to their rise in the East?
Perhaps. However, if shifting industrial production to China ends up lowering purchasing power in the West, then Chinese exports will suffer. China itself is taking the first steps toward strengthening its own domestic market. “Export-led growth” cannot be a strategy for everyone. World prosperity actually depends on strengthening both domestic production and domestic markets. But this requires the sort of deliberate industrial policy which is banned by the bureaucracies of globalization: the World Trade Organization and the European Union. They operate on the dogmas of “comparative advantage” and “free competition”… The world economy is being treated as a big game, where following the “rules of the free market” are more important than the environment or the basic vital necessities of human beings.
Only the financiers can win this game. And if they lose, well, they just get more chips for another game from servile governments.
Impasse?
Where will it all end?
It should end in something like a democratic revolution: a complete overhaul of economic policy. But there are very strong reasons why this will not happen.
For one thing, there is no political leadership in France ready and able to lead a truly radical movement. Mélenchon comes the closest, but his party is new and its base is still narrow. The radical left is hamstrung by its chronic sectarianism. And there is great confusion among people revolting without clear programs and leaders.
Labor leaders are well aware that employees lose a day’s pay for every day they go on strike, and they are in fact always anxious to find ways to end a strike. Only the students do not suffer from that restraint. The trade unionists and Socialist Party leaders are demanding nothing more drastic than that the government open negotiations about details of the reform. If Sarkozy weren’t so stubborn, this is a concession the government could make which might restore calm without changing very much.
It would take the miraculous emergence of new leaders to carry the movement forward.
But even if this should happen, there is a more formidable obstacle to basic change: the European Union. The EU, built on popular dreams of peaceful and prosperous united Europe, has turned into a mechanism of economic and social control on behalf of capital, and especially of financial capital. Moreover, it is linked to a powerful military alliance, NATO.
If left to its own devices, France might experiment in a more socially just economic system. But the EU is there precisely to prevent such experiments.

Viva Palestine Convoy Breaks Siege and Enters Gaza to Jubilant Crowds ~ link ~ Amidst scenes of jubilation from thousands of Palestinians there to greet the convoy, Kevin Ovenden, the convoy director, expressed his joy at being in Gaza once again. “We have driven more than 3,000 miles to bring this essential aid and to break this illegal siege of Gaza. We have been joined by supporters from Morocco and Algeria and from the Gulf States and Jordan, to make this the biggest convoy ever to break the siege of Gaza. We are absolutely overjoyed to be here and to bring with us the soil from the graves of those who were massacred on the Mavi Marmara which will be used to plant trees as a memorial to their sacrifice.”
In a statement, UN envoy Robert Serry reports of the building "alarming." He said settlement construction is "illegal under international law" and "will only further undermine trust."
Settlers attack Palestinians farmers and schools in Northern West Bank ~ link ~
On Wednesday 20 October, Israeli settlers attacked a group of farmers from the Boreen village, in the southern Nablus district, who were working in their fields, harvesting the olive crop.
The settlers, some of whom were armed, injured farmer Moner Qados, beating him in the back and face. While he was being taken to the hospital the army arrested his relative Ismael Qados, who was also working on his land in the same area. According to local sources, the settlers then stole some of the crops.
In the very early hours of Wednesday, 20 October, settlers entered the girls’ school of the Assawiya village, south of Nablus. The settlers vandalized the building, damaging classrooms and breaking windows. They also completely burned the school’s storage building which contained various school supplies and unused athletic equipment. The headmaster of the school, Mayson Saalha said " This is not the first time the settlers attacked our school. Months ago they attacked it. This time they also wrote bad words on the walls of the classes, like ‘peace from the hill tops.’”
On Thursday morning, 21 October, settlers from the Ariel settlement in the Salfeet district attacked farmers from the Kofel Hares and Iskaka villages. The settlers took crops from the fields that are located on the agricultural land near the settlement. The land belongs to families from Kufel Hares.
Settler violence has increased in recent weeks, following the end of Israel’s West Bank settlement freeze, resulting in a surge of settlement construction. There have also been a large number of targeted attacks on Palestinian farmers and their agricultural land as villages attempt to harvest this year’s already diminished olive crop.

It travelled through France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Syria. Everywhere the reception was fantastic and the generosity of well-wishers unsurpassed. Towards the end there was a frustrating delay in Syria whilst negotiations at the highest levels were conducted with the Egyptian authorities. In the end it was all worth it as the Egyptian authorities decided to allow passage of the whole convoy, sadly excluding just 17 members of the convoy including George Galloway.
The convoy will be handed over in its entirety to the relevant bodies tomorrow and the members of the convoy then expect to leave Gaza and return home in the next 48 hours after celebrations and formal thanks are given.
The Viva Palestina convoy of almost 150 vehicles, 370 people from 30 different countries and $5 million of aid has entered Gaza.

NETANYAHU'S SPIRITUAL PARTNER, RABBI YOSEF
“Gentiles need to die….goyim have no place in the world.” This was part of a rambling diatribe of racist slurs heard of Israel’s Channel 10 this weekend, The perpetrator? Leader of the Israeli Sephardic community, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, founder of the Shas Party, part of the Likud coalition headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
This isn’t the first time Rabbi Yosef has said these things. The immensely popular Likudist Rabbi, when not calling for the slaughter of Palestinians or advocating the destruction of Christianity, offers recipes, marriage tips and lots of advice on how Jews can rule the world as the new “master race.” Rabbi Yosef is a combination of Jon Stewart, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson with more than a touch of Adolf Hitler thrown in for moderation.
Nearly every day now, the world is subjected to one claim or another by a “spiritual” leader in Israel. One day it’s “G-d created the planet ONLY for Jews” or the continual diatribes against Christianity, “Jesus was a criminal and liar,
Saturday’s broadcast by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef was punctuated with continual laughter, riotous at times, from an audience clearly enjoying his message:
Rabbi Yosef wasn’t clear if he was referring to the United States and the billions of dollars in aid given to Israel, the world’s third largest arms exporter or making reference to a conspiratorial financial entity bent on enslaving the world. The more the Rabbi talked, the smaller the gulf became between mankind, his “master race” and the “g-d” he seems to act as both exclusive agent and negotiator for.
The Rabbi, called by some “Madman Yosef” went on:
“With gentiles it will be like any person, they need to die but G-d will give them longevity.
Why?
Imagine that one’s donkey would die. They would lose profit. Their donkey is their servant
The goyim is like a donkey to the Jews, they exist only to serve and are only allowed by G’d to live a long life because they are the beast of burden the Jews. Were the goyim to stop serving Jews, g-d would end their lives”
Rabbi Yosef is the spiritual head of the Shas Party, a member of the Likud coalition, which won 11 seats in the recent election and supports Prime Minister Netanyahu. Oddly, however, the Shas Party claims that the Ashkenazi Jews, those of European dissent, wrongly control Israel and are not genuinely members of “g-d’s chosen.” Things have been rocky for the Shas Party as their former leader, Areh Dari, onetime Minister of the Interior, was jailed in 2000 for allegedly accepting bribes. Since that time, Shas has joined with the extremist Likud Party of Netanyahu.
Yosef is said to despise Netanyahu, an American born Ashkenazi, but accepts Likud rule based on similar views of the role of goyim in the world.

Gen Shelton, who spoke about the book yesterday, wrote: “At one point during the Clinton administration the codes were actually missing for months. That's a big deal — a gargantuan deal.”
1 out of 7 Americans receiving food assistance at an average of $133 per person ~ link ~ The U.S. government is now spending roughly $5.6 billion per month on food assistance helping out 41,836,000 Americans. How bad is it for the lower economic strata of families in our economy? In January of 2007 we had 26,000,000 Americans on food assistance. The economic crisis has added 15,800,000 Americans onto the food assistance program now known as SNAP. These numbers are incredible and demonstrate how deep the recession has gotten. Even though on paper the recession ended in the summer of 2009 these numbers show a very different economic climate. Where did these 15 million people come from? Many have fallen off the middle class treadmill and have been sucked into the ever growing invisible class of people in the U.S.

I find the above disheartening because those that struggle the most financially in our economy started feeling the recession in 2000. The credit bubble did very little to help this group. What the debt bubble produced was it allowed for the masking and destruction of the middle class who actually thought they were moving forward but were merely playing house with massive mortgage debt and credit cards. The stock market has yielded no results for over a decade for most laymen investors. Why? The stock market is now a fast paced casino where insider information trumps any sound advice or connections to success in the real economy. Yet the poor in our society barely have enough for food, forget about investing in our stock market. Yet it is stunning that 1 out of 7 Americans is now on food assistance. If you break down the average costs per head, the numbers appear grim:
$5,601,600,000 (monthly cost) / 41,836,000 (Americans on food assistance) = $133 per personI think a lot of people like to beat up on this group because they think that overall people are defrauding the system. Really? Just look at the above data. How much can you do with $133 per month? Sure you have cases in the media of fraud but we’re talking about 41 million people here. A family of three will get something like $400 per month. What about rent? Utilities? Is it any wonder that many families camp out at Wal-Mart stores overnight just so they can have their electronic debit cards refilled so they can purchase food for family members at the end of the month? It is amazing that a tiny program like SNAP with an average payout of $133 a month is literally keeping us one inch away from Great Depression like scenarios.

How insane is the new rule on 1099 filings? It will go way beyond the tracking of those who buy gold coins. If you buy your employees a pizza once a week, that costs $20, you will have to provide your local pizzeria a 1099 form, since the annual amount of your purchase will be over $600, says Reuters.

Southern California foreclosure attorney Jeff Barnes tells me:
Borrowers are being lured into loan mod scams where they are told that they have to be 2-3 months behind in payments before a loan mod will be considered, then when they make application, the foreclosure process has already started (and the claims have been made against the insurances, etc. because the loan is in default) and the loan mod is denied “because of the foreclosure”.In other words, the lure of mortgage modifications are being used to trap homeowners into the foreclosure process.

Richard M. Bowen, former chief underwriter for Citigroup’s consumer-lending group, said he warned his superiors of concerns that some types of loans in securities didn’t conform with representations and warranties in 2006 and 2007.
“In mid-2006, I discovered that over 60 percent of these mortgages purchased and sold were defective,” Bowen testified on April 7 before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission created by Congress. “Defective mortgages increased during 2007 to over 80 percent of production.”

Mr Bracken sparked outrage yesterday when he told Jon Faine's ABC talk-back program the attacks were not the result of terrorist activity.
He said the story was a conspiracy that "didn't stand up" to scientific scrutiny.
This morning Mr Bracken phoned into Faine's program again for a right of reply.
He said he wasn't phoning as the president of the Trades Hall council or as secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia.
Mr Bracken stood by his comments and said he had the support of 50 per cent of the community.
He also attacked Faine, claiming he was ridiculed on yesterday's program.
"Unfortunately cowards like yourself have set the political agenda in this country for too long," said Kevin Bracken"I won't be cowered down to bullies like yourself."
Yesterday, Julia Gillard has dismissed as "stupid and wrong" Mr Bracken's belief.
The Federal Opposition seized on the comments in Parliament, with Victorian MP Josh Frydenberg asking Ms Gillard what action she would take against Mr Bracken “to send a message that such remarks are unacceptable”, The Australian reported.
“Obviously I don’t agree with the remarks, obviously they are stupid and wrong,” Ms Gillard said.
“The Labor Party is a large organisation, people join it as individuals – we don’t dictate what people think.”
After being accused by Liberal frontbencher Christopher Pyne of not answering the question on discipline, Ms Gillard said: “If it is the intention of the Leader of the Opposition to expel every member who says something stupid, I’ll start sending him a weekly list.”
In Victoria, Shadow Attorney General Robert Clarke said Mr Bracken's comments were a direct insult to Australian soldiers serving in Afghanistan.
"It strikes at the very heart of the West's struggle against terrorism and it is a disgrace that while Australian soldiers are serving and dying in Afghanistan that Mr Bracken make these wild claims that undermine the very reason for their presence in Afghanistan," he said.
Mr Clarke called on Premier John Brumby to condemn these comments in the strongest possible terms and for the outspoken union leader to be disciplined.
"The Trades Hall Council needs to consider Mr Bracken's future as its president and the MUA needs to consider his future as their secretary,'' he said.
"These comments can't stand they need to be condemned in the strongest possible terms.''
Dozens dead in Haiti from suspected cholera outbreak ~ link ~ A suspected outbreak of cholera has killed at least 135 people in central Haiti, officials have said.
The director-general of the health department, Dr Gabriel Thimote, said he was awaiting laboratory test results to confirm cholera was the cause.
